Every American should be troubled by this full-on assault on our constitutional system of checks and balances.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s dispense with any pretense of principle we might hear coming from the other side. Democrats\u2019 court packing push boils down to one thing: tipping the court in their favor so they can circumvent the legislative process and impose their extreme agenda on the rest of the country. It\u2019s no coincidence Democrats\u2019 idea of \u201crestoring balance\u201d to the court just so happens to mean adding the exact number of seats that would give them a progressive majority.<\/p>\n<p>It is hard to imagine anything that would fly further in the face\u00a0of our Founders\u2019 vision of a\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Favalon.law.yale.edu%2F18th_century%2Ffed78.asp&#038;data=04%7C01%7CACarroll%40gop.com%7C0936c30131cf4fc74c2a08d9052f685f%7C4a082c81950a410d9618462a9c74d6ae%7C1%7C0%7C637546523445441394%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&#038;sdata=AYJaSUP12tA3F%2F6lwdwOejqdtJObF0IeYzyvaRt5nQU%3D&#038;reserved=0\">completely independent<\/a> judiciary more than changing the nature of our nation\u2019s highest court purely for partisan gain.<\/p>\n<p>Even worse, packing the court would do lasting damage to one of the few remaining institutions Americans still\u00a0regard as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.gallup.com%2Fpoll%2F4732%2Fsupreme-court.aspx&#038;data=04%7C01%7CACarroll%40gop.com%7C0936c30131cf4fc74c2a08d9052f685f%7C4a082c81950a410d9618462a9c74d6ae%7C1%7C0%7C637546523445441394%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&#038;sdata=EPXmBPc3%2BsMff9NKVD16Ai%2BGKLDMn4qcm2S0wchIy6w%3D&#038;reserved=0\">trustworthy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t take my word for it. Democrats and other liberals are also on record rejecting this radical idea.<\/p>\n<p>Once upon a time, then-Senator Joe Biden\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.newsweek.com%2Fjoe-biden-once-called-court-packing-bonehead-idea-terrible-terrible-mistake-1583763&#038;data=04%7C01%7CACarroll%40gop.com%7C0936c30131cf4fc74c2a08d9052f685f%7C4a082c81950a410d9618462a9c74d6ae%7C1%7C0%7C637546523445451380%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&#038;sdata=iFc4RBMUCvl1radTEd01aFKKDYXZmj6SpMTb4TCxNLE%3D&#038;reserved=0\">called<\/a> court packing a \u201cboneheaded idea\u201d and a \u201cterrible mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senator Bernie Sanders has <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgrabien.com%2Fgetmedia.php%3Fid%3D1046615%26key%3D803e3c8f6d58a994abb50742f182981a&#038;data=04%7C01%7CACarroll%40gop.com%7C0936c30131cf4fc74c2a08d9052f685f%7C4a082c81950a410d9618462a9c74d6ae%7C1%7C0%7C637546523445461374%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&#038;sdata=73ihMeasQ3ywSwNkLhG31yV6HMpjBCY4W2%2FgFxx4OG4%3D&#038;reserved=0\">said<\/a> adding more justices to the court is \u201cnot the ultimate solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg called court packing a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.foxnews.com%2Fpolitics%2Fflashback-ruth-bader-ginsburg-opposed-court-packing&#038;data=04%7C01%7CACarroll%40gop.com%7C0936c30131cf4fc74c2a08d9052f685f%7C4a082c81950a410d9618462a9c74d6ae%7C1%7C0%7C637546523445461374%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&#038;sdata=JLjAgo0FsB9d%2BemkseK8Xaq8JXi1THMvgw%2B9Y6z1tsU%3D&#038;reserved=0\">bad idea<\/a>.\u201d She was right, as is Justice Stephen Breyer when he <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.usatoday.com%2Fstory%2Fnews%2Fpolitics%2F2021%2F04%2F07%2Fsupreme-court-justice-stephen-breyer-warns-against-packing-bench%2F7116124002%2F&#038;data=04%7C01%7CACarroll%40gop.com%7C0936c30131cf4fc74c2a08d9052f685f%7C4a082c81950a410d9618462a9c74d6ae%7C1%7C0%7C637546523445471371%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&#038;sdata=6BEGIqKxFAtpuatgMNRT%2BQq%2BXofydQzUDbA0bJEXC1I%3D&#038;reserved=0\">says<\/a> adding more justices would erode trust and the public\u2019s confidence in the courts.<\/p>\n<p>So what changed for Democrats like Senator Ed Markey, the legislation\u2019s lead sponsor, who only a few years ago <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.foxnews.com%2Fpolitics%2Fsupreme-court-packing-ed-markey-nine-justices&#038;data=04%7C01%7CACarroll%40gop.com%7C0936c30131cf4fc74c2a08d9052f685f%7C4a082c81950a410d9618462a9c74d6ae%7C1%7C0%7C637546523445471371%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&#038;sdata=PR0lOrxU639z2yPd7eW5whVbMG%2Bz5Ud5y2hg%2BYc%2BAVs%3D&#038;reserved=0\">supported<\/a> a nine justice Supreme Court?<\/p>\n<p>Politics, pure and simple. Democrats thought court packing was a bad idea when they were out of power, and now they think it is a great one.<\/p>\n<p>Some of their urgency to pack the court no doubt also stems from a string of recent Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.foxnews.com%2Fpolitics%2Fcalifornia-lifts-coronavirus-era-indoor-worship-limits-after-supreme-court-struck-down-ban&#038;data=04%7C01%7CACarroll%40gop.com%7C0936c30131cf4fc74c2a08d9052f685f%7C4a082c81950a410d9618462a9c74d6ae%7C1%7C0%7C637546523445481365%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&#038;sdata=boKY1uz4Sqdi6WqhiYmW5xTZuti3W77ZzPwX4WU%2Bbk4%3D&#038;reserved=0\">decisions<\/a> that uphold religious liberty.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s true that seeing Americans exercising their rights free from government control is a major stumbling block for many on the Left. But Supreme Court decisions Democrats happen to disagree with is no reason to abandon more than 150 years of bipartisan precedent that has served our country well.<\/p>\n<p>In the last election, Joe Biden cast himself as someone who would be a restorer of political norms. Nothing would be more norm-shattering than upending judicial independence for the sake of political expediency.<\/p>\n<p>That is why Joe Biden should actually lead and use the bully pulpit of the presidency to speak out against his party\u2019s efforts to undermine the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, nothing up to this point suggests that Biden will.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of the bipartisanship and unity he campaigned on, as president\u00a0Biden has been a rubber stamp for the most radical agenda in American history.<\/p>\n<p>Facing\u00a0his left\u00a0flank, Biden couldn\u2019t even bring himself to condemn his party\u2019s\u00a0baseless calls to\u00a0boycott Georgia\u2019s small businesses. Far from speaking out against the\u00a0bullying tactics, Biden emerged as\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gop.com%2Fbiden-knew-his-boycott-would-hurt-workers%2F&#038;data=04%7C01%7CACarroll%40gop.com%7C0936c30131cf4fc74c2a08d9052f685f%7C4a082c81950a410d9618462a9c74d6ae%7C1%7C0%7C637546523445481365%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&#038;sdata=cHMh2rqGwVbz%2B0H0u0g1eDbtYlX2g57bRmt0SvWa6cw%3D&#038;reserved=0\">boycott\u2019s<\/a> loudest cheerleader.<\/p>\n<p>For the sake of the future of judicial independence, however, let\u2019s hope Biden doesn\u2019t cave to the far-left once again when it comes to packing the court.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Biden should use this opportunity to demonstrate he was serious about trying to bring the country together, show some backbone, and reject this radical power grab once and for all.<\/p>\n<p><em>Harmeet K.
