Gavin Newsom on Monday praised the Biden administration\u2019s announcement that it was moving to restore California\u2019s emissions waiver, a policy shift that would let the state set more stringent emission standards for cars and SUVs.<\/p>\n<p>The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/epa-reconsiders-previous-administrations-withdrawal-californias-waiver-enforce\">on Monday announced<\/a> that it is considering overturning a Trump-era action called the Safer Affordable Fuel-Efficient Vehicles Rule Part One: One National Program Rule (SAFE-1), which revoked a waiver that let California\u00a0enforce stricter standards on greenhouse gas emissions and zero-emissions vehicle sales mandates. SAFE-1 also sought to preempt other states from adopting California\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions standards, which thirteen states have opted to do (<a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.arb.ca.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2019-10\/ca_177_states.pdf\">pdf<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden issued an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/01\/20\/executive-order-protecting-public-health-and-environment-and-restoring-science-to-tackle-climate-crisis\/\">executive order<\/a> on his first day in office that directed federal agencies to review a bevy of Trump administration rules and executive actions, aiming to reverse Trump-era orders that Biden said harm the environment or endanger public health, with SAFE-1 coming into the crosshairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, we are delivering on President Biden\u2019s clear direction to tackle the climate crisis by taking a major step forward to restore state leadership and advance EPA\u2019s greenhouse gas pollution reduction goals,\u201d said\u00a0EPA Administrator Michael Regan, in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am a firm believer in California\u2019s long-standing statutory authority to lead. (John Fredricks\/The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cFor more than half a century, waivers enabling California to develop rigorous vehicle emissions standards have allowed the Golden State to lead the nation with breakthrough innovations for progressively cleaner cars and trucks, while driving down pollution in overburdened communities,\u201d Newsom added.<\/p>\n<p>When adopting SAFE-1, then President Donald Trump said he was concerned that California\u2019s stricter emission standards would have a negative impact on manufacturing costs in the automobile industry. In a series of tweets ahead of the rule\u2019s adoption in 2019, Trump said the action would result in vehicles that are safer and cheaper, and that \u201cthere will be very little difference in emissions between the California standard and the new U.S. standard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the Trump administration revoked the waiver,\u00a0California Attorney General Xavier Becerra <a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/news\/press-releases\/attorney-general-becerra-files-lawsuit-against-epa-attacking-california%E2%80%99s#:~:text=SACRAMENTO%20%E2%80%93%20California%20Attorney%20General%20Xavier,gas%20(GHG)%20and%20zero%20emission\">launched a lawsuit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve said it before and we\u2019ll say it again: California will not back down when it comes to protecting our people, our health, and our environment from preventable pollution,\u201d Becerra said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The EPA announcement comes days after the Transportation Department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/press-releases\/nhtsa-advances-biden-harris-administrations-climate-jobs-goals\">said it had<\/a> \u201cmoved aggressively\u201d to fall in line with Biden on climate change by proposing\u00a0to withdraw its portions of the SAFE-1 rule.<\/p>\n<p>Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/04\/22\/fact-sheet-president-biden-sets-2030-greenhouse-gas-pollution-reduction-target-aimed-at-creating-good-paying-union-jobs-and-securing-u-s-leadership-on-clean-energy-technologies\/\">aims to<\/a> transition the country to achieve a 50\u201352 percent reduction of greenhouse gas pollution from 2005 levels by 2030 and net-zero emissions in the overall economy by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>Critics argue that stricter regulations could hurt companies struggling to recover from the pandemic while shifting away from reliance on fossil fuels would lead to job losses and undermine American energy independence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>California Gov.
