Although the letter didn\u2019t single out specific states, the Human Rights campaign recently labeled the Tennessee legislature a \u201chotbed of anti-LGBTQ\u201d bills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are deeply concerned by the bills being introduced in state houses across the country that single out LGBTQ individuals \u2013 many specifically targeting transgender youth \u2013 for exclusion or differential treatment,\u201d wrote the companies in the letter. \u201cLaws that would affect access to medical care for transgender people, parental rights, social and family services, student sports, or access to public facilities such as restrooms, unnecessarily and uncharitably single out already marginalized groups for additional disadvantage. They seek to put the authority of state government behind discrimination and promote mistreatment of a targeted LBGTQ population.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs we make complex decisions about where to invest and grow, these issues can influence our decisions. America\u2019s business community has consistently communicated to lawmakers at every level that such laws have a negative effect on our employees, our customers, our competitiveness, and state and national economies,\u201d wrote the companies in the letter.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u201cAs business leaders dedicated to equal treatment, respect, and opportunity for all \u2013 as well as to improving the financial and investment climate across the country \u2013 we call for public leaders to abandon or oppose efforts to enact this type of discriminatory legislation and ensure fairness for all Americans.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While Oracle is just one of dozens of companies that signed the public letter \u2014 other signatories including Microsoft, Google, Facebook and American Airlines \u2014 the tech company has, notably, been eying an expansion in Nashville that would create around 8,500 high-paying jobs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mayor John Cooper, a Democrat, announced only weeks ago that Oracle Corporation was prepared to make a \u201cbillion-dollar bet\u201d on Music City that would cover upfront infrastructure costs. \u201c<\/span><span>This is a huge win for our city. In an unprecedented deal structure for Nashville, no new debt is being issued and there is no burden on our taxpayers,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/fox17.com\/news\/local\/mayor-oracle-is-ready-to-make-a-billion-dollar-bet-on-nashville-jobs-development\">said<\/a> the mayor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Oracle told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/press-releases\/tennessee-state-legislature-sends-anti-transgender-student-bathroom-bill-2-0-to-governor-lees-desk\">WKRN<\/a> after the mayor\u2019s reveal that they believe \u201cNashville has tremendous potential\u201d as a future site.\u00a0<span>The Oracle deal, if finalized, would be the \u201clargest jobs deal in state history and the fourth-biggest business investment in state records,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/nashville\/news\/2021\/04\/26\/metro-oracle-industrial-development-board.html\"><span>reports<\/span><\/a><span> Nashville Business Review.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In response to the public letter, Governor Bill Lee (R) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/restricted\/?return=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tennessean.com%2Fstory%2Fnews%2Fpolitics%2F2021%2F04%2F15%2Ftennessees-bills-against-lgbtq-rights-risk-millions-dollars%2F7194312002%2F\">told<\/a> News4 Nashville: \u201cOrganizations have opportunities to weigh in on the legislative process but ultimately, Tennesseans, through their elected representatives, determine the law in our state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>The Human Rights Campaign has criticized Tennessee lawmakers over various bill in recent weeks, including a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/third-gop-gov-moves-to-protect-girls-sports-athletes-to-be-separated-by-biological-sex-not-gender-identity\"><span>transgender sports bill<\/span><\/a><span> that the governor signed into law in late March and, more recently, a bathroom bill for public schools called HB 1233.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Tennessee state legislature is quickly becoming a hotbed of anti-LGBTQ legislation run by lawmakers who are determined to discriminate against and further stigmatize LGBTQ youth instead of focusing on real problems facing Tennesseans,\u201d HRC President Alphonso David, who previously served as counsel to Governor Andrew Cuomo, said in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/press-releases\/tennessee-state-legislature-sends-anti-transgender-student-bathroom-bill-2-0-to-governor-lees-desk\"><span>statement<\/span><\/a><span> earlier this month. \u201cAs they continue to advance harmful legislation like HB 1233 (SB 1367), their actions will have a real and negative impact on the lives of trans youth in Tennessee by enabling and empowering those who wish to discriminate against them.
