It will not show up on our homepage. It will be absent from our Instagram feed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The publication wrote, \u201c<span class=\"s2\">Almost 15 percent<\/span>\u00a0of greenhouse gas emissions globally come from livestock (and everything involved in raising it); 61 percent of those emissions can be traced back to beef. Cows are\u00a0<span class=\"s2\">20 times less efficient to raise than beans<\/span>\u00a0and roughly\u00a0<span class=\"s2\">three times less efficient than poultry and pork<\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Noting that some people might assume that the move \u201csignals some sort of vendetta against cows\u2014or the people who eat them,\u201d the company stressed, \u201cthis decision was not made because we hate hamburgers (we don\u2019t!). Instead, our shift is solely about sustainability, about not giving airtime to one of the world\u2019s worst climate offenders. We think of this decision as not anti-beef but rather pro-planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The company noted that it \u201cpulled the plug on beef well over a year ago\u201d and readers have supported the recipes that were published instead of ones including beef, adding that the company released recipes for \u201c<span class=\"s2\">cauliflower and mushrooms<\/span>, not steaks and hot dogs\u201d last summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20200211-why-the-vegan-diet-is-not-always-green\"><span class=\"s1\">BBC<\/span><\/a>, not all vegan foods are inherently good for the environment and many can still have a negative impact. Joseph Poore, a researcher at the University of Oxford studies the environmental impacts of food. Poore said, \u201c\u2026it\u2019s essential to be mindful about everything we consume: air-transported fruit and veg can create more greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram than poultry meat, for example.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Epicurious said that it chose to announce its decision now because beef consumption in the United States has \u201cbeen slowly creeping up in the past few years,\u201d adding that the \u201cconversation about sustainable cooking clearly needs to be louder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Pushing readers to essentially make choices based off of the ability to virtue-signal, the article continued, \u201c\u2026every time you abstain from beef at the grocery store or a restaurant, you send a signal\u2014to the grocery store, yes, but also, and perhaps more influentially, to whomever you talk to about your decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In another article on the topic, the publication addressed the anticipated question as to whether or not individual action matters as much as government policy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIndividual action is really just the first step toward collective action,\u201d climate journalist Amy Westervelt said. \u201cMaybe you push your entire family to eat less meat, or it could be getting involved on the policy side and looking at how your kid\u2019s school system purchases food\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe problem with beef is actually more systemic than it is individual,\u201d climate journalist and cohost of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hot-take.ghost.io\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>Hot Take<\/i>\u00a0podcast<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Mary Anna\u00efse Heglar said. \u201cHowever, it is one of the places where your individual action can have extreme influence on the system itself.
