Chinese president Xi Jinping reportedly attended the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese naval buildup comes after a series of escalations from Beijing toward Taiwan, a democratic country and American ally. In March, China <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1qbfYF0VgDBJoFZN5elpZwNTiKZ4nvCUcs5a7oYwm52g\/edit#gid=2015900050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flew<\/a> 54 flights into Taiwanese airspace and <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/national-security\/china-sends-25-warplanes-into-taiwanese-airspace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another<\/a> 25 in early April. The aggressive behavior coincided with incursions into the South China Sea, including 220 ships landing within one of the U.S. Navy&#8217;s defense perimeters, leaving questions about the territorial security of Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>Two more helicopter carriers are already under construction in Shanghai. The carriers can house several aerial vehicles, making them a formidable threat in the event of an amphibious invasion of Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>The guided-missile warship, known as the Renhai-class cruiser, sports its own advanced radar technology and array of missile systems, and Beijing has authorized the construction of eight other Renhai-class cruisers. Meanwhile, China is building an additional nuclear-powered submarine, which defense analysts <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/blog\/buzz\/chinas-underwater-nukes-country-killers-or-paper-tigers-27026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">say<\/a> improves their defensive nuclear posture.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. military planners say China may invade Taiwan in the next six years, and former naval officers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2021-04-25\/u-s-china-sea-war-could-spread-to-japan-australia-india\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expect<\/a> a war over Taiwan could spread to Australia, Japan, and even the Indian Ocean. Australian Defense Minister Peter Dutton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/australia-defence-minister-says-conflict-with-china-over-taiwan-should-not-be-2021-04-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> reporters Sunday a conflict between Taiwan and China &#8220;should not be discounted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Republicans suggest a larger navy and defense budget would meet the rising threat from China. It remains unclear, however, if the Biden administration will stay the course and build a larger U.S. fleet, as early signals from the White House <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/national-security\/republicans-drawing-new-battle-lines-in-heated-defense-budget-fight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicate<\/a> a stagnant defense budget.
