He explained that his client had\u00a0\u201cseen stories about a singer, Lana Del Rey, who fashioned a clear plastic barrier under a see-through fabric for a public book signing event.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.0391061452514\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Her workplace has now removed the video. Reilly (@ryanjreilly) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ryanjreilly\/status\/1380646038114070529?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 9, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Earlier this month, Lamberth had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/04\/16\/capitol-riot-defendant-mesh-mask-482441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">demanded an explanation<\/a> after video circulated on social media showing Powell adorned with the porous mask at her workplace. As a condition of her pre-trial release, U.S. District Court Judge Beryl Howell \u2014 an Obama appointee who supervised the grand jury during the Mueller investigation \u2014 had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.dcd.228286\/gov.uscourts.dcd.228286.9.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"ruled at the time (opens in a new window)\">ruled<\/a> in February that Powell \u201cmust wear a mask whenever she leaves her residence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Powell\u2019s \u201cdecision to appear in a video wearing a mask with holes in it at work mocks compliance with the Court\u2019s Order setting as a condition of pre-trial release that she \u2018wear a mask whenever she leaves her residence,&#8217;\u201d Lamberth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/f\/?id=00000178-db97-d07a-ad78-dbb71fbc0000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0April 16. \u201cNo reasonable person could think that the defendant\u2019s \u2018mask\u2019 complied with that condition, which Chief Judge Beryl A. Howell imposed to ensure the defendant \u2018would not pose a risk to the health and safety of the community when she left her house.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe court does not take the defendant\u2019s willingness to flout the court\u2019s order lightly,\u201d Lamberth continued before threatening to revoke Powell\u2019s pre-trial release, imprison her until her trial, or charge her with contempt of court. He also demanded a written response within 10 days explaining why the court should not take such actions.<\/p>\n<p>Lamberth was also miffed that Powell\u2019s lawyer had allegedly told her to throw the mask away, an act the judge characterized as instructing his client to destroy evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Powell \u201cfound herself in a work situation\u00a0where she was encouraged to refrain from mask wearing at times when she was required to engage\u00a0with store customers,\u201d the attorney wrote in his response to Lamberth. \u201cMs. Powell refused to do this and instead sought to find a mechanism for\u00a0complying with the Court\u2019s Order while also satisfying her employer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs described in the Defendant\u2019s affidavit, Ms. Powell had seen stories about a singer, Lana Del Ray, who fashioned\u00a0a mask with a clear plastic barrier under a see-through fabric for a public book signing event,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile clearly unwise, the creation and use of the mask at issue was not designed to mock\u00a0the Court or its release condition,\u201d the attorney later wrote. \u201cThe Defendant is responsible to support herself and her many\u00a0children thereby making this job important to her ability to make ends meet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Powell made a\u00a0poor choice in wearing the mask at issue, however it was not done with a bad intent,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>He also denied allegations that he instructed his client to throw the mask away, but rather simply told her not to wear it again.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/04\/16\/capitol-riot-defendant-mesh-mask-482441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Politico<\/a>, \u201cPowell was known in her community as a vehement anti-masker before her participation in the Jan. 6 events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related<\/strong>: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/lana-del-rey-addresses-mesh-face-mask-controversy-says-it-had-plastic-inside\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lana Del Rey Addresses Mesh Face Mask Controversy, Says It Had Plastic Inside<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
