Official media, major search engines, and internet censors in her home country are making as if it didn\u2019t happen,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/china-censors-nomadland-director-chloe-zhaos-oscar-win-11619440550#:~:text=%E2%80%9CNomadland%E2%80%9D%20director%20Chlo%C3%A9%20Zhao%20made,if%20it%20didn't%20happen.\">Wall Street Journal reported Monda<\/a>y.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Zhao\u2019s win, just the second time a woman has walked away with best director, unleashed a flurry of congratulatory messages on Chinese social media sites when it was announced Monday morning Beijing time. By midafternoon, nearly all of the posts had been erased,\u201d the outlet noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cState broadcaster China Central Television, the official Xinhua News Agency, and Communist Party mouthpiece the People\u2019s Daily stayed silent on the award throughout the day,\u201d the WSJ continued. \u201cTwo state media reporters told The Wall Street Journal that they had received orders from China\u2019s propaganda ministry not to report on Ms. Zhao\u2019s victory, despite what they described as her status as a Chinese national, because of \u2018previous public opinion.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That \u201cprevious public opinion\u201d is an interview Zhao, who immigrated to the United States with her parents when she was in high school, gave in 2013, where she said China is a country \u201cwhere there are lies everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those comments surfaced in China only earlier this year, but they put the \u201cNomadland\u201d director on a censorship list. Chinese social media platforms were quick to dump positive commentary about Zhao\u2019s win off their sites Sunday and Monday. The WSJ notes that only a single news article appeared about Zhao in China following her win, and that was an opinion piece that called on Zhao to be \u201cmore mature\u201d and \u201cavoid being a friction point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the snub seems simple, it may ultimately have an impact on \u201cNomadland\u201d as a film and Zhao as a director. Hollywood, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2020\/aug\/05\/china-hollywood-films-damaging-impact-report\">as the Guardian noted ahead of last year\u2019s Oscars<\/a>, has an ever-tightening relationship with the Chinese government, and that relationship is beginning to have an impact on not only where films are shown, but how they are made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Chinese Communist party is increasingly shaping what global audiences see,\u201d James Tager, the \u201cdeputy director of free expression research and policy at Pen America\u201d told the outlet. \u201cWhile we are all well aware of the strict controls that China\u2019s government maintains over dissent, independent thought and creativity within its own borders, the long arm of Chinese censorship \u2013 powered by vast economic incentives \u2013 has also reached deep into Hollywood, shaping perceptions, inculcating sensitivities and reshaping the bounds of what can be shown, said and told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because China heavily censors what its audience sees, content featuring LGBT characters and characters of color has been stripped out of even blockbuster films.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
