During the Chauvin trial, Fowler testified that Floyd\u2019s death should be classified as \u201cundetermined,\u201d not as a \u201chomicide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my opinion, Mr. Floyd had a sudden cardiac arrhythmia \u2026 due to his atherosclerotic and hypertensive heart disease \u2026 during his restraint and subdual by the police,\u201d Fowler said, NPR <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/trial-over-killing-of-george-floyd\/2021\/04\/14\/987134841\/watch-live-defense-testimony-resumes-in-derek-chauvins-trial\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fowler and his team determined fentanyl and methamphetamine contributed to Floyd\u2019s death, NPR noted, adding that the medical examiner also stated that there was \u201cexposure to vehicle exhaust, so potentially carbon monoxide poisoning or at least an effect from increased carbon monoxide in his bloodstream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Fowler,\u00a0Chauvin, at 140 pounds, used a \u201csingle-knee technique\u201d to restrain Floyd while awaiting paramedics, applying less than 23% of his body weight.<\/p>\n<p>Fowler concluded Chauvin\u2019s knee in no way \u201cimpacted the structures of Mr. Floyd\u2019s neck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of the vital structures were in the area where the knee appeared to be from the videos,\u201d he testified.<\/p>\n<p>The medical examiner\u2019s conclusions were apparently unacceptable to former chief medical examiner of Washington, D.C., Dr. Roger Mitchell Jr., who penned an open letter calling for Fowler to be investigated. Hundreds of other doctors signed the letter in agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Fowler\u2019s stated opinion that George Floyd\u2019s death during active police restraint should be certified with an \u2018undetermined\u2019 manner is outside the standard practice and conventions for investigating and certification of in-custody deaths,\u201d the letter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/cases-handled-ex-medical-examiner-chauvin-trial-examined-after-doctors-outcry-1586287\">said<\/a>. \u201cThis stated opinion raises significant concerns for his previous practice and management.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fowler\u2019s testimony was \u201cbaseless, revealed obvious bias, and raised malpractice concerns,\u201d the letter added. \u201cOur disagreement with Dr. Fowler is not a matter of opinion. Our disagreement with Dr. Fowler is a matter of ethics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response, AG Frosh\u2019s office said in a statement,\u00a0\u201cWe agree that it is appropriate for independent experts to review reports issued by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) regarding deaths in custody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fowler has noted that he worked with \u201ca large team of forensic pathologists\u201d to come to his findings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a large team of forensic pathologists, with layers of supervision, and those medical examiners always did tremendous work,\u201d the medical examiner said.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Chauvin was found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-jury-finds-derek-chauvin-guilty\">guilty<\/a> of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in relation to the death of Floyd.<\/p>\n<p>Chauvin\u2019s attorney Eric Nelson argued during the trial that Floyd\u2019s drug use and bad heart were crucial factors in his death, and that Chauvin used reasonable force through an authorized prone hold.<\/p>\n<p>The Hennepin County <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/medical-examiner-concluded-george-floyd-likely-died-of-fentanyl-overdose-court-docs-reveal\">medical examiner<\/a>\u00a0revealed that Floyd\u2019s autopsy showed the deceased had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/george-floyds-girlfriend-floyd-hospitalized-for-overdose-months-earlier-drug-dealer-with-him-during-arrest\">potentially lethal<\/a>\u00a0levels of drugs in his system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/almost-50-of-republicans-think-the-wrong-verdict-was-reached-in-derek-chauvin-trial-poll\">Almost 50% Of Republicans Think The Wrong Verdict Was Reached In Derek Chauvin Trial:\u00a0Poll<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
