He was allowed to play in the Galaxy\u2019s season-opening win over Inter Miami last week, which was broadcast on national television and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/soccer\/story\/2021-04-23\/mls-suspends-galaxys-sebastian-lletget-for-homophobic-slur\">reportedly<\/a> drew record ratings for an MLS opener on ABC. Pop star Becky G, who is Lletget\u2019s girlfriend, sang the national anthem before the game.<\/p>\n<p>MLS says it has a zero-tolerance policy for racist or homophobic language.<\/p>\n<p>Lletget has repeatedly expressed remorse for making the comment and sharing the video with approximately 689,000 Instagram followers.<\/p>\n<p>His remark was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outsports.com\/2021\/4\/9\/22376403\/sebastian-lletget-gay-slur-usmnt-galaxy-puto-los-angeles-midfielder-instagram-apology\">first reported<\/a> on April 9 by Outsports, an online outlet owned by Vox Media that has described itself as \u201cthe world\u2019s most-read LGBT sports publication.\u201d According to Outsports, Lletget could be heard saying, \u201cEeeeeeehhhh puto!\u201d as a caption on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2wqqBTAeeRU\">video<\/a> read: \u201cUnlucky brooooooo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Outsports reported at the time:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p><em>Within minutes of Outsports contacting spokespeople for the Galaxy and USMNT, seeking comment, Lletget deleted the video. Less than two hours later, Lletget reached out to our Cyd Zeigler, telling him by phone he wanted to apologize for his actions and take full responsibility.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"11.071216617211\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Powerful message from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MLS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@MLS<\/a> to its players: There will be zero tolerance of gay slurs in the league.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d previously suggested the league is moving in a different direction. Earlier today, I posted a video that included me using a derogatory slur in Spanish.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I have taken down a video from my Instagram story but want to address its impact and not hide from this\u2026\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I want to be part of the solution \u2014 not part of the problem \u2014 and continue to be an advocate and an ally for the LGBTQ+ community. Those who know me know my character and heart. I will remain outspoken in my support and advocacy. My error doesn\u2019t change that.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Thanks for your accountability. I need to do and be better.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>MLS said in a statement that the league \u201cacknowledges and appreciates Lletget\u2019s prompt apology and the accountability he has taken for his actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said a word that shouldn\u2019t have been said,\u201d Lletget <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/la-galaxy\/story\/4360277\/galaxys-sebastian-lletget-poor-decision-to-use-anti-gay-slur\">said<\/a> earlier this month. \u201cAnd although there\u2019s been a lot of discussion and debate about the meaning of the word because of different dialects in Spanish and cultures, the truth is it\u2019s a harmful word and it shouldn\u2019t have been said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a human, I made a mistake and that\u2019s simply what happened.
