When asked about supposedly systemically racist cops in America, Tatum refuted that, too, and blasted activists and politicians for\u00a0\u201criding the wave of dead black people in order to make money and get political leverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was not a monumental case,\u201d Tatum told the BBC of the Chauvin verdict. \u201cPolicing in America is not inherently racist, we don\u2019t live in a racist county.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have a problem with racism in our country,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe have a problem with people not following the law. We also have a problem with politicians making up things so they can get re-elected. That\u2019s exactly what\u2019s been happening, and that\u2019s why you never see anything change. They\u2019re lying to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The BBC host then told Tatum that America has a problem of \u201csystemic racism\u201d in policing. \u201cHow do you account\u201d for a higher rate of black people being killed by police, he asked the former officer.<\/p>\n<p>Tatum dismissed the narrative, noting \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/585152\/people-shot-to-death-by-us-police-by-race\/\">twice as many white people get killed by police every year<\/a>, twice as many white people get killed unarmed by police every year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack people commit over half the violent crimes in this country and only make up 13% of the population,\u201d Tatum continued. \u201cThey commit over half of the murders in this country, but only make up 13% of the population.\u201d That\u2019s why officers are policing black people more, he explained.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ucr.fbi.gov\/crime-in-the-u.s\/2018\/crime-in-the-u.s.-2018\/tables\/table-43\">According<\/a> to 2019 FBI crime statistics, black people committed 27.4% off all crimes and 53.3% of all murders and non-negligent manslaughter.<\/p>\n<p>Tatum then outlined his case against the media\u2019s strategic racial narrative by highlighting the death of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/walsh-are-cops-hunting-down-black-men-statistics-say-no\">Tony Timpa<\/a>, a white man who was suffocated to death during an arrest. The case was similar to the death of George Floyd, Tatum said, \u201cbut because he was white, we don\u2019t hear about it and nobody talks about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you understand there are black police officers, too, in many of this majority-black cities?\u201d he asked the BBC host. \u201cAre they racist? No, that\u2019s not the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Activists and politicians are \u201criding the wave of dead black people in order to make money and get political leverage,\u201d Tatum said. The BBC host then quickly ended the segment and thanked Tatum for his appearance.<\/p>\n<p>A jury on Tuesday found Chauvin guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in relation to the death of George Floyd.<\/p>\n<p>On May 25, Chauvin and three other officers arrested and detained Floyd after he allegedly gave counterfeit money at a convenience store. Following a struggle to get Floyd into the back of a police cruiser, viral video shows that\u00a0Chauvin kneeled on Floyd\u2019s neck and back for nearly nine minutes to detain Floyd while awaiting paramedics.<\/p>\n<p>Chauvin\u2019s attorney Eric Nelson argued during the trial that Floyd\u2019s drug use and bad heart were crucial factors in his death, and that Chauvin used reasonable force through an authorized prone hold. The Hennepin County <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/medical-examiner-concluded-george-floyd-likely-died-of-fentanyl-overdose-court-docs-reveal\">medical examiner<\/a>\u00a0revealed that Floyd\u2019s autopsy showed the deceased had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/george-floyds-girlfriend-floyd-hospitalized-for-overdose-months-earlier-drug-dealer-with-him-during-arrest\">potentially lethal<\/a>\u00a0levels of drugs in his system.<\/p>\n<p>Nelson argued to Judge Peter Cahill on Monday for a mistrial, but was unsuccessful.
