(Photo by EZEQUIEL BECERRA\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5>OAN Newsroom<br \/>UPDATED 4:10 PM PT \u2013 Friday, April 23, 2021<\/h5>\n<p>A space radar capable of capturing small objects that threaten the safety of astronauts and satellites was inaugurated Thursday at a farm in northwestern Costa Rica.<\/p>\n<p>Surrounded by large sugar cane crops on the Pacific Coast of the Central American country, the four large panels that make up the radar are connected to the servers of aerospace company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leolabs.space\/\">LeoLabs<\/a> in San Francisco, California.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the most advanced commercial radar in the world for tracking space objects,\u201d LeoLabs CEO and Founder Daniel Ceperly said. \u201cIt\u2019s for a few reasons: This radar was designed to track very small pieces of debris. It turns out there are about 250,000 pieces of debris in space that are two centimeters in size and larger. They aren\u2019t tracked today and they threaten satellites.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A space radar capable of capturing small objects that threaten the safety of astronauts and satellites was inaugurated at a farm in northwestern Costa Rica <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ZSaYKears3\">pic.twitter.com\/ZSaYKears3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Reuters (@Reuters) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Reuters\/status\/1385727684592881664?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 23, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ceperly added, everything in space moves very quickly \u2014 at approximately 8 kilometers per second \u2014 so even a tiny piece of debris hitting a satellite can completely destroy it.<\/p>\n<p>The radar installation, called the Costa Rica Space Radar, can monitor objects that transit in low earth orbit (LEO) in the region of the planet near the equator. This is an advantage offered by the Costa Rican geographical location, according to LeoLabs CEO Ceperley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne service is it checks for collisions days before they might happen, so that satellites can move and avoid the collision,\u201d Ceperly noted. \u201cIf you\u2019ve seen the movie \u201cGravity\u201d we are basically making sure that doesn\u2019t happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ceperly said another LeoLabs service tracks newly launched satellites.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe pick them up first with this radar and give the satellite operators precise locations for their satellites,\u201d Ceperly said. \u201cSo that they can get in touch with them and move them into operations very quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ceperly declined to reveal the cost of developing such a technology.
