This @versace is definitely up there. I\u2019m not often asked what my favorite parenting quote is, but I\u2019ll post it anyway,\u201d Mendes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CN25TPFBaHD\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cSpanking does for a child\u2019s development what hitting a spouse does for a marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CN25TPFBaHD\/?utm_source=ig_embed&#038;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"13\" readability=\"-9.169014084507\"><\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Mendes\u2019 comments sparked a fierce debate among her followers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes! I agree. Every time I was \u2018disciplined\u2019 growing up, I only felt fear and shame. IT never \u2018corrected\u2019 behavior. I would never hit my child to teach them a lesson and inflict psychological and physical pain, but that\u2019s just me,\u201d one follower said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf an adult hits an adult that\u2019s called assault and they can press charges and end up in jail yet when a defenseless child is hit it\u2019s called discipline,\u201d said another follower.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLove this quote! I have three kids so I understand the urge to spank! (Also most of us were raised in cultures or families where physical discipline is routine and accepted so I get it) Spanking, though, is loss of control on the part of the parent,\u201d another said. \u201cAs parents were are trying to teach our kids how to communicate in a healthy way even when we are really, really upset. We are also helping them build those internal controls so that they do not lash out on others when things do not go their way or they are frustrated, angry or upset. We have to model what we want to see in our kids. (And we won\u2019t be perfect so that includes apologizing when we mess up!)\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some followers, however, disagreed and defended spanking as a disciplinary tactic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hear ya Eva but I disagree. You can use a spanking to correct a child. Pain grabs their attention. BUT there is a big difference between spanking and abuse. Spanking out of anger or without talking to the child and correcting their behavior is abuse. ALSO not every child needs to be spanked,\u201d said one follower.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren that get spanked on occasion seem a lot better behaved\u2026.but the key is to not over do it,\u201d another follower said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know. I was spanked and now I\u2019m a respectful adult. And believe me, I deserved those whoopings. I was a brat,\u201d said another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for your comment.
