On the day the memo was circulated, the <em>Times<\/em> published an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/21\/technology\/welcome-to-the-yolo-economy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a>\u00a0about how some &#8220;exhausted&#8221; millennials with &#8220;fattened&#8221; bank accounts are &#8220;quitting stable jobs in search of postpandemic adventure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Professional journalists were quick to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/annehelen\/status\/1384895977916612610\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">identify<\/a> with the piece, in particular the feeling of exhaustion that has driven so many of their colleagues into voluntary unemployment. &#8220;Exhausted despair is [a] phrase that really resonates these days,&#8221; Lorenz <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TaylorLorenz\/status\/1384931523858771972\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> on Twitter, the popular social networking website.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Taibbi, the popular Substack writer, was among those who were puzzled by Lorenz&#8217;s tweet. &#8220;Can anyone explain where the \u2018I&#8217;m so exhausted&#8217; trope came from, and why it&#8217;s such a thing among people in upper class intellectual professions?&#8221; he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Lorenz went on to applaud the poignancy of a <em>Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/19\/well\/mind\/covid-mental-health-languishing.html?smid=tw-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">essay<\/a> on &#8220;languishing,&#8221; described as a &#8220;sense of stagnation and emptiness&#8221; that promises to be the &#8220;dominant emotion of 2021.&#8221; The journalist, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TaylorLorenz\/status\/1384931523858771972\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a>\u00a0the concept of languishing failed to capture &#8220;the deep hopelessness, despair, and burnout living in this world leaves [you] with.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It really makes you think.
