So, first, we\u2019re going to start with \u2026 the possibility of consolidating the standard and advanced studies diploma,\u201d Sale said. \u201cHopefully, this discussion will allow us to think through how we maintain a rigorous academic foundation in a way that\u2019s really equitably serving the needs and aspirations of all of Virginia learners.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In March, the African-American Superintendents Advisory Council, a Virginia-based committee that represents African-American school leaders, parents, and students, released a set of recommendations to \u201cadvance equity.\u201d According to Sale, nixing advanced degrees is part of the council\u2019s recommendations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to Sale\u2019s presentation, the majority of advanced diploma earners in 2019 were Asian and white students. Seventy-nine percent of Asians received advanced diplomas, 63% of white people, 44% of Hispanics, 40% of black people, and 35% were held by \u201ceconomically disadvantaged\u201d students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Virginia Department of Education told Fox News that the board is \u201creviewing the current diploma options available to Virginia students but at this time there is not a formal proposal before the board.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Virginia Department of Education is also considering implementing the \u201cVirginia Math Pathways Initiative,\u201d which will redefine math in Virginia\u2019s K-12 schools. Parents in the northern Virginia suburbs were furious with the state\u2019s announcement to alter math curriculum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Parents Against Critical Theory, a concerned parents organization in northern Virginia, called on parents to \u201cget engaged\u201d in light of the exploratory committee\u2019s announcement of both advanced diploma changes and the math curriculum alterations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe destruction is never-ending. If parents were upset about the changes in Virginia\u2019s math program, they will be apoplectic after watching this [meeting] that just ended,\u201d the group said in a statement following Sale\u2019s meeting. \u201cWhy are they doing this? Equity, all in the name of equity. Parents, get engaged, we have got to save our kids\u2019 education.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>School districts and specific schools in Virginia have taken it upon themselves to push towards more \u201cequitable\u201d standards as well. In hopes of creating a more \u201cequitable\u201d school, Thomas Jefferson High School \u2014 an elite Virginia specialty school for math and science \u2014 recalibrated its admissions process to shrink the prominent Asian-American population.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Daily Wire <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/parent-coalition-alleges-elite-virginia-high-schools-admissions-process-discriminates-against-asian-american-students\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span>:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"15\">\n<p><i><span>In October, the [Fairfax County Public School] board voted to nix [Thomas Jefferson High School\u2019s] rigorous admissions test and the $100 application fee in the name of equity and inclusion. The proposal \u2014 which was brought forward by Superintendent Scott Braband \u2014 sought to increase the size of the high school.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The school board also voted to approve a new \u201cholistic review\u201d process.
