Bryant\u2019s death sparked protests in Columbus as Black Lives Matter activists and others accused the officer of using unjustified force against the teen.<\/p>\n<p>Bowling Green State University criminal justice professor Philip Stinson, who specializes in fatal use of force scenarios by law enforcement, said that the officer\u2019s actions were justified because he had a \u201creasonable\u201d belief that potentially fatal harm could have come to another person had he hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy first impression is that the officer was legally justified in using deadly force,\u201d Stinson told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/news\/crime\/2021\/04\/22\/columbus-police-shooting-makhia-bryant-appears-lawful\/7318300002\/\">The Columbus Dispatch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a terribly tragic situation, and my heart goes out to the girl and her family and friends,\u201d he said. \u201cBut from looking at the video, it appears to me that a reasonable police officer would have had a reasonable apprehension of an imminent threat of serious bodily injury or death being imposed against an officer or someone else. That\u2019s the legal standard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Retired Columbus SWAT officer James Scanlon agreed with Stinson\u2019s analysis, saying that the officer was justified in shooting Bryant to protect a girl that Bryant had been lunging at with a knife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn officer is justified in using deadly force if his life or the life of someone else is at risk,\u201d Scanlon told the Dispatch. \u201cFew would argue that there weren\u2019t at least two lives there that were at serious risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officer shot Bryant \u201cto save the life of someone he doesn\u2019t even know,\u201d Scanlon said. \u201cIt\u2019s a shame that no one has recognized that that officer, in all likelihood, saved one or more lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An officer responding to a 911 distress call shot Bryant as she lunged with a knife at another girl, attempting to stab her. As\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/here-are-three-important-things-the-media-wont-tell-you-about-the-makhia-bryant-case\">The Daily Wire<\/a>\u00a0reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"16.791228070175\">\n<p><em>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.10tv.com\/article\/news\/local\/16-year-old-girl-shot-and-killed-by-police-officer-in-southeast-columbus\/530-c77bb47e-97d1-47b5-8ed8-099c105a0f20\">WBNS-TV<\/a>, officers in Columbus, Ohio received a 911 call from a distressed individual saying multiple women were attempting to stab her. Bodycam footage from the incident showed officers arriving to find Bryant wielding a knife at two girls, at which point the responding officer stepped in and fired his service weapon as she appeared to be attempting to stab one of the victims.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cShe came at her with a knife,\u201d an officer can be heard saying in the video.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Bryant was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where she was later pronounced dead.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>White House Press Secretary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/she-was-a-child-white-house-calls-fatal-police-shooting-of-black-teen-in-ohio-tragic\">Jen Psaki<\/a>\u00a0said Bryant\u2019s death was \u201ctragic\u201d and Bryant was \u201cjust a child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe killing of 16-year-old Ma\u2019Khia Bryant by Columbus police is tragic. She was a child. We are thinking of her friends and family and the communities that are grieving her loss,\u201d Psaki said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that police violence disproportionately impacts Black and Latino communities and that Black women and girls, like Black men and boys, experience higher rates of police violence.
