Biden said that Floyd\u2019s death \u201cripped the blinders off for the whole world to see the systemic racism\u201d in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he is an architect of multiple federal laws in the 1980s and \u201990s that disproportionately jailed black people and contributed to what many people see as systemic racism,\u201d the reporter said, later highlighting a quote from a left-wing activist who said that Biden needs to take responsibility for creating the system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo what extent does President Biden acknowledge his own role in systemic racism, and how does that inform his current policy positions?\u201d the reporter asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I would say that the President is \u2014 one of the President\u2019s core objectives is addressing racial injustice in this country not just through his rhetoric, but through his actions,\u201d Psaki claimed. \u201cAnd what anyone should look to is his advocacy for passing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, for nominating leaders to the Department of Justice to address long-outdated policies, and to ask his team \u2014 leadership team here in the White House to prioritize these issues in his presidency, which is current and today and not from 30 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he believe it\u2019s important to accept his own culpability in setting up a system \u2014\u201d the reporter pressed before being cut off by Psaki.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I\u2019ve answered your question,\u201d Psaki snapped back as she then quickly called on another reporter.<\/p>\n<p>WATCH:<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"04\/21\/21: Press Briefing by Press Secretary Jen Psaki\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wPJCRZCC6Cc?start=2015&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>PARTIAL TRANSCRIPT PROVIDED VIA THE WHITE HOUSE:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"85\">\n<p><em>REPORTER: Thank you, Jen.\u00a0 I have a quicker \u2014 quick follow-up question on something you were asked yesterday, and then a second somewhat-related question.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>JEN PSAKI, WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY:\u00a0 Okay.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>REPORTER: Regarding yesterday, I \u2014 respectfully, I feel like you didn\u2019t give quite a firm answer, and I wanted to try again.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>PSAKI:\u00a0 Okay.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>REPORTER: You were asked whether President Biden will honor his Democratic primary campaign pledge to release, quote, \u201ceveryone\u201d in prison for marijuana.\u00a0 People are skeptical that he will.\u00a0 President Biden is personally responsible for sending some people to prison for life for marijuana under his 1994 crime bill.\u00a0 And Vice President Kamala Harris oversaw 1,900 marijuana convictions as San Francisco District Attorney.\u00a0 So, will President Bonnor [sic] \u2014 will President Biden honor his commitment to release everyone imprisoned for marijuana?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>PSAKI:\u00a0 Well, I think what I did yesterday is reiterate what his position on marijuana was: decriminalizing, rescheduling, and certainly legalizing medical marijuana. What you\u2019re asking me is a legal question.\u00a0 And now we\u2019re in government, and so I had to follow up with our legal team, and I don\u2019t have any additional information quite yet.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>REPORTER: So regarding rescheduling, that wouldn\u2019t necessarily release anyone from prison.\u00a0 Schedule II is \u2014 has fentanyl and cocaine.\u00a0 You can\u2019t just \u2014<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>PSAKI:\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 It addresses things moving forward though, which is important and important to many advocates.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>REPORTER: So should people in prison for marijuana who are asking President Biden to honor his pledge to release them \u2014 should they expect to be released or are they going to serve life in prison for marijuana?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>PSAKI:\u00a0 Well, again, I think I\u2019ve stated very clearly what the President\u2019s position is.\u00a0 What you\u2019re asking me is a legal question.\u00a0 I\u2019d point you to the Department of Justice.\u00a0 And if there\u2019s anything more we can provide from here, I\u2019m happy to provide it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>REPORTER: My second question: President Biden, yesterday, responding to George \u2014 the George Flord [sic]\u2013 Floyd case verdict, said that George Floyd\u2019s death, quote, \u201cripped the blinders off for the whole world to see the systemic racism\u201d in the United States. \u00a0But he is an architect of multiple federal laws in the 1980s and \u201990s that disproportionately jailed Black people and contributed to what many people see as systemic racism.
