A massive carceral system and a million other cops, capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy, ableism, misogyny, to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"13.928571428571\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">One cop almost down. A massive carceral system and a million other cops, capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy, ableism, misogyny, to go.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Chenjerai Kumanyika (@catchatweetdown) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/catchatweetdown\/status\/1384615476974833667?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 20, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In June 2020, Kumanyika penned an <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2020\/06\/03\/obama-george-floyd\/\">open letter<\/a> to former President Barack Obama in which he stated, \u201cThe job of the modern police in America has been to reinforce a racist social order since its beginnings in the 19th century.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kumanyika quoted Obama citing \u201cthe majority of men and women in law enforcement who take pride in doing their tough job, the right way, every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he continued:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"26\">\n<p><em>Your premise here, as I understand it, is that when police officers commit acts of racist violence, they are outliers, doing something\u00a0other\u00a0than the job they were hired to do \u2014 that racist violence is a departure from the work that police officers are paid for and expected to do.\u2026 it is frustrating to see you, an extremely influential African American public figure, refusing to grapple in a more serious, historical, and political way with what the job of the police actually is \u2014 and how it contributes to our oppression.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A more historically informed and honest engagement with policing will have to confront a painful but urgent reality: The job of the modern police in America has been to reinforce a racist social order since its beginnings in the 19th century. Regardless of the good intentions of any individual police officer, the history, economic incentives, and culture of the police in every era, in every city in the United States, make this clear. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cModern police departments were not founded to protect citizens. They were founded to preserve and enforce social order within oppressive social hierarchy,\u201d Kumanyika stated.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, CNN\u2019s Van Jones <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/van-jones-reacts-to-chauvin-guilty-verdict-one-down-many-many-more-to-go\/\">told<\/a> the network\u2019s Anderson Cooper, \u201cAll we want is the police to obey the law. We\u2019re not asking for anything but that. For the police to obey the law. And when they break the law, they should have handcuffs just like anybody else. We don\u2019t want them to be below us or beneath us. They should obey the law. That is what justice looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cooper asked, \u201cDo you worry some people are going to see this and say, \u2018Okay, that\u2019s good. It\u2019s done. It\u2019s over\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones shook his head, saying, \u201cIt took too long. It took too long. It took too much marching. It took \u2013 too many tears and it was too close. And I don\u2019t care who you are, this morning you woke up afraid to hope. You were scared to hope. Even with all the evidence you saw, you were scared to hope this morning.
