And it also raises the question of whether DeGeneres only agreed to the appearance under the condition that her scandal would be ignored\u2014or if she just knew it would be.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In July 2020, one employee and 10 former employees of \u201cThe Ellen DeGeneres Show\u201d came forward with accusations that the atmosphere of the show behind the scenes was far from the show\u2019s motto, \u201cbe kind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The employees spoke to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/krystieyandoli\/ellen-employees-allege-toxic-workplace-culture\">Buzzfeed News<\/a>, which delineated various charges that were made. One former employee asserted, \u201cThat \u2018be kind\u2019 bulls*** only happens when the cameras are on. It\u2019s all for show. I know they give money to people and help them out, but it\u2019s for show.\u201d Another bitter comment, \u201cI think it is a lot of smoke and mirrors when it comes to the show\u2019s brand. They pull on people\u2019s heartstrings; they do know that\u2019s going to get likes and what people are going to go for, which is a positive message. But that\u2019s not always reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of the accusations included insensitive comments about race, being fired after returning from a month-long absence at a mental health facility, and receiving a warning after creating and publicizing a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for medical costs that weren\u2019t covered by the show\u2019s health insurance.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of July, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/krystieyandoli\/ex-ellen-show-employees-sexual-misconduct-allegations\">Buzzfeed News<\/a> reported, \u201cAccording to dozens of men and women who work behind the scenes, the office is a place where sexual harassment and misconduct by top executive producers runs rampant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe claims cost DeGeneres 1.1 million viewers who stopped watching the show over the last year, according to Nielsen data released in March. Her viewership was up to 2.6 million at one point but is now down to 1.5 million viewers,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9494295\/Jimmy-Kimmel-fails-ask-Ellen-claims-toxic-behavior.html\">The Daily Mail<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Last August, executive producers Ed Glavin and Kevin Leman and co-executive producer Jonathan Norman were let go.<\/p>\n<p>In September, after months of taping her show from her home during quarantine, DeGeneres appeared on stage for her show, stating:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"13\">\n<p><em>We have had a lot of conversations over the last few weeks about the show, our workplace, and what we want for the future. have made the necessary changes and today we are starting a new chapter. \u2026 I take that very seriously, and I want to say I am so sorry to the people who were affected. know that I\u2019m in a position of privilege and power, and I realize that with that comes responsibility, and I take responsibility for what happens at my show.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On Tuesday, after Kimmel and DeGeneres joked about smoking \u201cwacky-tobacky\u201d and \u201cplayed a quick round of \u2018Who\u2019s High?\u201d with pedestrians on Hollywood Boulevard,\u201d as The Daily Beast noted, they discussed an incident in which DeGeneres, who was stoned, drove Portia de Rossi to the emergency room for an appendectomy while very stoned. Then Kimmel segued to DeGeneres\u2019 new show, HBO Max\u2019s furniture show \u201cEllen\u2019s Next Great Designer<em>.\u201d <\/em>Kimmel commented, \u201cI love shows where the people can do something, you know, because a lot of these shows the people just kind of walk around \u00a0and talk to each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd make out,\u201d DeGeneres interjected.<\/p>\n<p>Kimmel continued, \u201cAnd make out. Have you ever built anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d DeGeneres answered. \u201cI\u2019ve never built anything. I just buy things that are built.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After turning to her documentary \u201cEndangered\u201d that is airing the same day as the HBO show, Kimmel asked, \u201cYou play a game on your show from time to time that you\u2019ve brought to us, actually, and this is a game that tests \u2014 people are often surprised, like if I\u2019ll come home from work, and there\u2019s somebody at my house, they\u2019ll say, \u2018Who jabbed on the show tonight?\u2019 I\u2019ll go, \u2018I don\u2019t know.
