National Guard troops who are deployed throughout the city to protect civilians from potential protests after the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin have been left unarmed at the request of D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.<\/p>\n<p>A directive\u00a0from Bowser\u2019s office, which was approved by the acting secretary of the Army, mandated that the troops entrusted with the duty of supporting the D.C.\u00a0Metropolitan Police Department are forbidden from carrying weapons to defend themselves, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/dc-mayor-bowser-national-guard-troops-unarmed-chauvin-guilty-verdict\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fox News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The troops have been stationed to\u00a0protect people and property at 30 different places throughout the nation\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n<p>As Fox News further reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"20\">\n<p><em>Bowser\u2019s office sent a letter to Maj. Gen. William Walker of the D.C. National Guard earlier this month, requesting troops be \u201cactivated\u201d to assist the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNo DCNG personnel will be armed or engaged in any law enforcement activity during this activation,\u201d the letter to Walker, from director of D.C.\u2019s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency, Christopher Rodriguez, wrote earlier this month.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Bowser\u2019s administration also told Walker that \u201cthe mission of the DCNG during this activation will primarily be crowd management, \u2018Quick Response Force\u2019\u00a0(QRF) and to assist with blocking vehicles at traffic posts.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Several National Guard sources claimed to Fox News that the troops are \u201coutraged\u201d by the request, and one reportedly compared their assignment to serving as \u201cboycotts with reflective vests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey may be equipped with safety vests and lighted traffic wands, as requested by MPD,\u201d acting Army Secretary John Whitley\u00a0wrote to Walker, according to an internal letter obtained by Fox News. The letter went on to stipulate that National Guardsmen will be provided \u201cpersonal protective equipment, including helmets, plate carriers, and ballistic plates\u201d as well as \u201ccivil disturbance equipment, including batons and shields for personal protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Washington, D.C., and other major cities are bracing for potential unrest Tuesday night despite the guilty verdict against Chauvin. As The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-jury-finds-derek-chauvin-guilty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> regarding the conclusion of the trial:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"20.158129175947\">\n<p><em>After a little over ten hours of deliberation, a jury on Tuesday found former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in relation to the death of George Floyd.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The jury considered three separate charges, \u201csecond-degree murder\u2014unintentional, while committing a felony; third-degree murder; and second-degree manslaughter,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/derek-chauvins-trial-is-over-heres-what-to-know-before-the-verdict-11618852907\">according to the Wall Street Journal<\/a>. \u201cThe judge explained that third-degree murder requires proof Mr. Chauvin caused Mr. Floyd\u2019s death by committing an eminently dangerous act that was highly likely to cause death and showed a reckless disregard for human life.
