But it is accountability, which is the first step toward justice,\u201d said Ellison, who called for systemic change, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/minnesota-keith-ellison-guilty-verdict-bc288800-584b-477b-87cc-c16f7e123151.html\">reports<\/a> Axios. Ellison also said any people who decide to honor Floyd\u2019s legacy, such as through demonstrations, should do it \u201ccalmly, and legally and peacefully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI urge everyone to continue the journey to transformation and justice. It\u2019s in your hands now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to use this verdict as an inflection point,\u201d Ellison <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eEtxYzRzrUo\">said<\/a>. \u201cWhat if we just prevented the problem instead of having to try these cases. We don\u2019t want anymore community members dying at the hands of law enforcement and their families lives ruined. We don\u2019t want anymore law enforcement members having to face criminal charges and their families lives ruined. We don\u2019t want anymore communities torn apart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ellison suggested ways to prevent such negative outcomes, including re-examining \u201cthe use of force and our old subtle assumptions,\u201d by \u201cacknowledging and lifting\u00a0 up everyone\u2019s humanity,\u201d and maintaining accountability for officers who violate laws and policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis verdict demands us to never give up the hope that we can make enduring change,\u201d said Ellison. \u201cGenerations of people said slavery would never end, generations said Jim Crow would never end, generations said women would never be equal to men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ellison also said officers deserve to work in departments \u201cwhere they don\u2019t have to worry about colleagues who don\u2019t follow the rules,\u201d and proclaimed that \u201cthe work of our generation is to put an end to the vestiges of Jim Crow and the centuries of trauma, and finally put an end to racism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>Chauvin was found guilty on three counts, including second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter, nearly a year after video of his last moments prompted national unrest and riots. Closing arguments in the case concluded Monday \u2014 when the jury was briefly sequestered \u2014 and the verdict was reached late Tuesday. Chauvin\u2019s bail has been revoked, and the judge expects him to be sentenced in roughly eight weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The verdict has been met with swift reaction from politicians, including former President Barack Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cToday, a jury did the right thing.
