Ted Cruz (R-TX), who argued that such comments could lead to a mistrial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m praying the verdict is the right verdict,\u201d Biden\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/549217-biden-praying-for-chauvin-conviction-evidence-overwhelming\">said <\/a>on Tuesday.\u00a0\u201cWhich is \u2014 I think\u00a0it is overwhelming in my view.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ted Cruz denounced Joe Biden\u2019s rhetoric as being equally as irresponsible as Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoe Biden decides that\u00a0<span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\">Maxine Waters<\/span> shouldn\u2019t be the only politician foolishly providing grounds for a mistrial or a possible basis on appeal to challenge any guilty conviction,\u201d Cruz tweeted.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.4710743801653\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Joe Biden decides that Maxine Waters shouldn\u2019t be the only politician foolishly providing grounds for a mistrial or a possible basis on appeal to challenge any guilty conviction. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zGOz0963No\">https:\/\/t.co\/zGOz0963No<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tedcruz\/status\/1384568238978252809?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 20, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Cruz was referring to the incendiary comments made by Congresswoman Maxine Waters over the weekend when she said people should \u201cget more confrontational\u201d if a guilty verdict is not delivered in the Chauvin trial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking for a guilty verdict. We\u2019re looking for a guilty verdict. And we\u2019re looking to see if all of this [inaudible] that took place and has been taking place after they saw what happened to George Floyd,\u201d Waters said. \u201cIf nothing does not happen, then we know, that we\u2019ve got to not only stay in the street, but we\u2019ve got to fight for justice, but I am very hopefully and I hope that we\u2019re going to get a verdict that will say guilty, guilty, guilty. And if we don\u2019t, we cannot go away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got to get more active. [We\u2019ve] got to get more confrontational,\u201d she added. \u201c[We\u2019ve] got to make sure that they know we mean business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chauvin\u2019s defense attorney later requested a mistrial due to Waters\u2019 comments. Though Hennepin County District Judge Peter Cahill denied the motion for a mistrial, he did reluctantly admit that the congresswoman\u2019s comments may create an avenue for defense to appeal a guilty verdict.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\" lang=\"en\" xml:lang=\"en\" readability=\"23\">\n<p>\u201cAnd it is so pervasive that it is I just don\u2019t know how this jury it can really be said to be that they are free from the taint of this,\u201d the lawyer representing Derek Chauvin said. \u201cAnd now that we have U.S. representatives, threatening acts of violence in relation to the specific case, it\u2019s mind-boggling to me, judge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I\u2019ll give you that Congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trail being overturned,\u201d Cahill responded.<\/p>\n<p>Cahill, however, did not believe that the congresswoman\u2019s comments ultimately mattered.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI think if they want to give their opinions, they should do so in a respectful and in a manner that is consistent with their oath to the Constitution, to respect a co-equal branch of government,\u201d he said. \u201cTheir failure to do so I think is abhorrent, but I don\u2019t think it has prejudices with additional material that would prejudice history, they have been told not to watch the news. I trust they are following those instructions, and that there is not in any way a prejudice to the defendant beyond the articles that we\u2019re talking specifically about the facts of this case. A Congress woman\u2019s opinion really doesn\u2019t matter a whole lot.
