could have long-term health consequences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough, scientific evidence supporting facemasks\u2019 efficacy is lacking, adverse physiological, psychological and health effects are established,\u201d the article states.<\/p>\n<p>In January, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/wr\/mm7007e1.htm?s_cid=mm7007e1_w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">performed a study<\/a>\u00a0and concluded that universal masking is recommended to slow the spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC concluded that cloth masks and medical procedure masks substantially reduce exposure from infected wearers and reduce exposure of uninfected wearers \u2014 the CDC\u2019s study states that mask mandates were in place in 38 states and DC at the time of publication.<\/p>\n<p>But Stanford researchers disagree and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reader.elsevier.com\/reader\/sd\/pii\/S0306987720333028?token=5D78D9F19310A998E50DD3926320917C79EFADDB16C1248067F5D8F2787BF4C34BB48AB0706C00EF9D0A0AAB889EE44E&#038;originRegion=us-east-1&#038;originCreation=20210418011448\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">say<\/a>\u00a0not only are masks ineffective, but could also be causing long-term health problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth medical and non-medical facemasks are ineffective to reduce human-to-human transmission and infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19,\u201d the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reader.elsevier.com\/reader\/sd\/pii\/S0306987720333028?token=5D78D9F19310A998E50DD3926320917C79EFADDB16C1248067F5D8F2787BF4C34BB48AB0706C00EF9D0A0AAB889EE44E&#038;originRegion=us-east-1&#038;originCreation=20210418011448\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">article<\/a>\u00a0details. \u201cWearing facemasks has adverse physiological and psychological effects \u2026 [and] long-term consequences of wearing facemasks on health are detrimental.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reader.elsevier.com\/reader\/sd\/pii\/S0306987720333028?token=5D78D9F19310A998E50DD3926320917C79EFADDB16C1248067F5D8F2787BF4C34BB48AB0706C00EF9D0A0AAB889EE44E&#038;originRegion=us-east-1&#038;originCreation=20210418011448\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">research<\/a>\u00a0suggests that the long-term practice of wearing facemasks has the \u201cstrong potential for devastating health consequences,\u201d and states that masks should be \u201cavoided from use.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a
