They\u2019re not driving the story. They\u2019re not driving the game,\u201d one critic told ABC Everyday of the dog parents, Bandit and Chilli. \u201cSeeing how they let their kids take the lead and how much initiative the kids will then take \u2014 because I am an enthusiastic player, I guess I could reflect on that. I can look back and say, \u2018Oh, I might have been dictating the games a bit too much.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the show, one critic contends, is far from perfect because it focuses on a heteronormative, two-parent dog family that clearly lives a middle-class existence without encountering diversity, despite theoretically living in one of Australia\u2019s largest cities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are the disabled,\u00a0<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pinknews.co.uk\/topic\/queer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"slk:queer\" data-rapid_p=\"8\" data-v9y=\"1\">queer<\/a>, poor, gender diverse, dogs of colour and single-parent dog families in \u201cBluey\u2019s Brisbane?\u201d Beverly Wang wrote in ABC Everyday. \u201cIf they\u2019re in the background, let them come forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wang concedes that Bluey\u2019s creators, writers, and animators may not \u201cview their show through a political lens\u201d the way that she does but, she contends, that\u2019s part of the problem. Children who are not exposed to an endless politicization of their surrounding culture might grow up embracing more conservative ideas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a parent of colour, I am always conscious of the presence \u2014 or absence \u2014 of diverse representation in kids\u2019 pop culture, what it means for children and the conversations we have around that,\u201d Wang wrote. \u201cI sincerely believe you don\u2019t have to be \u2018other\u2019 to think about this too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wonder about the limits of modelling imaginative play for parents and children who don\u2019t see themselves in the \u2018true Blue(y)\u2019 comfortably middle class, Australian nuclear family embodied by the Heelers. Who\u2019s missing out?\u201d she mused.<\/p>\n<p>The problem, Wang says, goes beyond Bluey. In fact, it\u2019s an issue with children\u2019s programming and literature across the board, which rarely forces impressionable kids to confront their own problematic realities.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cmajority of characters on children\u2019s television are white,\u201d Wang said, and \u201cmore animals than people of colour protagonists populating the pages of children\u2019s books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the essay was widely critiqued as \u201cwoke,\u201d some Bluey viewers did note that the show could do with updating.
