But it has become a shibboleth at the country&#8217;s elite institutions behind which lies a deep hostility to white men. Call it the new systemic racism.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The latest crop of <\/span><i><span>New York Times<\/span><\/i><span> interns provides a window into the dynamics at work. Of the <\/span><i><span>Times<\/span><\/i><span>\u2018<\/span><span>s 33 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytco.com\/careers\/newsroom\/newsroom-fellowship\/2021-22-fellows\/\"><span>interns<\/span><\/a><span>, one appears to be a white male. Five are men and 27 are women.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So much for looking like America, where census data <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/fact\/table\/US\/RHI125219\"><span>suggest<\/span><\/a><span> that white men account for about 30 percent of the population. They account for just 3 percent of <\/span><i><span>Times <\/span><\/i><span>interns. Men of all races account for 49.2 percent of the U.S. population and just 15 percent of <\/span><i><span>Times <\/span><\/i><span>interns. The <\/span><i><span>Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/i><span>\u2018s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/talkingbiznews.com\/they-talk-biz-news\/wsj-names-summer-2021-intern-class\/\"><span>class<\/span><\/a><span> of summer interns is similarly unrepresentative of the country at large.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It is entirely possible that few white men applied, or qualified for, these positions. It is more likely that two of the country&#8217;s leading newspapers are engaged in overt discrimination. After all,&nbsp;<\/span><i><span>Times<\/span><\/i><span> leaders issued a sweeping <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytco.com\/company\/diversity-and-inclusion\/a-call-to-action\/\"><span>report<\/span><\/a><span> in February that carefully tracked the racial composition of the newspaper at all levels and concluded that it suffers from &#8220;coverage that remains rooted in white perspective.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The new definition of diversity also sheds some light on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.princeton.edu\/news\/2021\/04\/06\/extraordinary-year-princeton-offers-admission-1498-students-class-2025#:~:text=News-,In%20an%20extraordinary%20year%2C%20Princeton%20offers%20admission%20to%201%2C498,for%20the%20Class%20of%202025&amp;text=April%206%2C%202021%207%20p.m.,increase%20from%2017%25%20last%20year.\"><span>admissions statistics<\/span><\/a><span> trumpeted earlier this month by Princeton University. The Ivy League school crowed that 68 percent of the U.S. residents admitted to its incoming freshman class &#8220;self-identify&#8221; as &#8220;people of color.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Maybe white high schoolers overlooked Princeton this year.
