Deliberations will continue on Tuesday. They are deciding whether there is proof beyond a reasonable doubt that Chauvin killed Floyd, either through malice \u2014 the second-degree murder charge \u2014 or through recklessness.<\/p>\n<p>Floyd\u2019s family says they are \u201coptimistic\u201d following closing arguments, and noted to the TODAY Show that they were in contact with the president on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was just calling,\u201d\u00a0Philonise Floyd said. \u201cHe knows how it is to lose a family member, and he knows the process of what we\u2019re going through. So he was just letting us know that he was praying for us, hoping that everything will come out to be OK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe and my family, we pray about it every day,\u201d Floyd added, couching his optimism by suggesting that an acquittal would have widespread implications. \u201cI just feel that in America, if a Black man can\u2019t get justice for this, what can a Black man get justice for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Floyd ended by suggesting that protesters should be peaceful but noted that he \u201ccan\u2019t stop people from doing the things that they\u2019re doing because people are in pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re hurt,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>White House press secretary Jen Psaki confirmed on Twitter that Biden had spoken to the Floyd family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden spoke with the family of George Floyd yesterday to check in with them and also share that the family was in his prayers,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>President Biden has not spoken on the case publicly, even to address Rep. Maxine Waters\u2019 (D-CA) claims, over the weekend, that anything less than a conviction should result in a \u201cconfrontation.\u201d Last year, after the video of Floyd\u2019s death went viral on social media, Biden called the incident a \u201ctragic reminder\u201d that there there is \u201can ingrained systemic cycle of injustice that still exists in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt cuts at the very heart of our sacred belief that all Americans are equal in rights and in dignity, and it sends a very clear message to the black community and to black lives that are under threat every single day,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n<p>The defense in Chauvin\u2019s case rested Monday and both sides presented their closing arguments before jurors entered their first day of deliberations. The state of Minnesota\u2019s case rests on Chauvin\u2019s actions being the proximate cause of Floyd\u2019s death, and the defense presented what they felt was evidence that Floyd died from a combination of drug and health problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe defense presented seven witnesses to bolster its\u00a0three-prong strategy\u00a0for clearing the former officer of culpability: Floyd died from drug and health problems; Chauvin\u2019s use of force was ugly but appropriate; and a hostile crowd of bystanders distracted the former officer,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/us\/live-news\/derek-chauvin-trial-04-20-21\/index.html\">CNN reported Monday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
