Maxine Waters (D-CA) reportedly requested a police escort ahead of calling for unrest if former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin is not found guilty of murder.<\/p>\n<p>Waters requested that a police officer escort her to and from the airport before she flew from Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C., to St. Paul International Airport in Minnesota, according to documents obtained by <a href=\"https:\/\/townhall.com\/tipsheet\/katiepavlich\/2021\/04\/19\/documents-show-maxine-waters-requested-police-escort-before-screed-advocating-for-violence-n2588144\">Townhall<\/a>. After landing in Minnesota, Waters called on protesters to get \u201cmore confrontational\u201d and said \u201cwe are looking for a guilty verdict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Waters\u2019 comments followed days of riots in the Minneapolis area over the Chauvin trial and the death of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old black man shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop. At the time, Wright had a warrant out for his arrest for first-degree aggravated robbery related to a 2019 incident. One of the arresting officers appeared to mistake her gun for a taser before shooting Wright.<\/p>\n<p>Waters appeared in Minneapolis over the weekend as the prosecution and defense in the Chauvin case prepared closing arguments for the trial. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/the-charges-facing-derek-chauvin-and-what-it-will-take-to-convict-him\">Chauvin<\/a> is facing charges of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in the death of George Floyd last year. Waters said that anything short of a guilty verdict for murder is unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking for a guilty verdict. We\u2019re looking for a guilty verdict. And we\u2019re looking to see if all of the talk that took place and has been taking place after they saw what happened to George Floyd,\u201d Waters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/democrat-maxine-waters-on-if-derek-chauvin-is-acquitted-get-more-confrontational-on-the-street\">said<\/a> alongside protesters over the Wright shooting. \u201cIf nothing does not happen, then we know, that we\u2019ve got to not only stay in the street, but we\u2019ve got to fight for justice, but I am very hopeful and I hope that we\u2019re going to get a verdict that will say guilty, guilty, guilty. And if we don\u2019t, we cannot go away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked what protesters should do if the verdict is anything other than guilty, Waters said: \u201cWell, we\u2019ve got to stay on the street. And we\u2019ve got to get more active. We\u2019ve got to get more confrontational. We\u2019ve got to make sure that they know that we mean business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chauvin trial Judge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/judge-in-chauvin-trial-maxine-waters-remarks-could-lead-to-whole-trial-being-overturned-on-appeal\">Peter Cahill<\/a> suggested that Waters\u2019 comments could result in the \u201cwhole trial being overturned\u201d on appeal should Chauvin be found guilty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trial being overturned,\u201d Cahill told Chauvin\u2019s defense attorney, responding to the attorney\u2019s request for a mistrial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m aware that Congressman Waters was talking specifically about this trial, and about the unacceptability of anything less than a murder conviction, and talk about being confrontational,\u201d Cahill continued. \u201cBut you can submit the press articles about that. This goes back to what I\u2019ve been saying from the beginning. I wish elected officials would stop talking about this case, especially in a manner that is disrespectful to the rule of law, and to the judicial branch and our function.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think if they want to give their opinions, they should do so in a respectful and in a manner that is consistent with their oath to the Constitution, to respect a co-equal branch of government,\u201d he said. \u201cTheir failure to do so I think is abhorrent, but I don\u2019t think it has prejudices with additional material that would prejudice history, they have been told not to watch the news. I trust they are following those instructions, and that there is not in any way a prejudice to the defendant beyond the articles that we\u2019re talking specifically about the facts of this case. A Congresswoman\u2019s opinion really doesn\u2019t matter a whole lot.
