Maxine Waters (D-CA) responded to criticism from the judge presiding over the Derek Chauvin trial on Monday by claiming the judge said her remarks at a protest over the weekend did not matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe judge said my words don\u2019t matter,\u201d Waters <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Olivia_Beavers\/status\/1384298926728126467\">told<\/a> reporters as she walked onto the House floor when asked about the backlash that she is facing over her remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Waters\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/democrat-maxine-waters-on-if-derek-chauvin-is-acquitted-get-more-confrontational-on-the-street\">said<\/a>\u00a0at a protest in Minnesota over the weekend that \u201cprotesters\u201d were \u201clooking for a guilty verdict\u201d and if they don\u2019t get what they want then \u201cwe cannot go away.\u201d When asked what \u201cprotesters\u201d should do if they do not get the verdict that they want, Waters responded that activists have \u201cgot to stay on the street,\u201d \u201cget more active,\u201d and \u201cget more confrontational.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Waters\u2019 comments generated instant backlash online that quickly led to condemnations and calls for punishment by U.S. lawmakers and newspaper editorial boards, including <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/04\/18\/impeach-and-remove-maxine-waters\/\">The New York Post<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/maxine-roils-the-chauvin-waters-11618881799\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Peter Cahill, who is presiding over the case involving the death of George Floyd, slammed Waters during closing arguments on Monday when defense attorney Eric Nelson sought to have the case dismissed because, as he argued, Waters\u2019 remarks can be \u201creasonably interpreted to be, threats against the sanctity of the jury process, threatening and intimidating a jury, demanding that if there\u2019s not a guilty verdict that there would be further problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cahill responded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/judge-in-chauvin-trial-maxine-waters-remarks-could-lead-to-whole-trial-being-overturned-on-appeal\">saying<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019ll give you that Congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trial being overturned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m aware that Congresswoman Waters was talking specifically about this trial and about the unacceptability of anything less than a murder conviction and talk about being confrontational,\u201d Cahill later added. \u201cThis goes back to what I\u2019ve been saying from the beginning. I wish elected officials would stop talking about this case, especially in a manner that is disrespectful to the rule of law and to the judicial branch and our function. I think if they want to give their opinions, they should do so in a respectful and in a manner that is consistent with their oath to the Constitution, to respect a co-equal branch of government. Their failure to do so I think is abhorrent, but I don\u2019t think it has prejudiced us with additional material that would prejudice his jury.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cahill concluded on the matter by saying that he thinks Waters\u2019 opinion \u201cdoesn\u2019t matter a whole lot\u201d when it came to the facts of the case.<\/p>\n<p>House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-mccarthy-moves-to-censure-waters-for-inciting-violence-would-cost-waters-chairmanship\">announced<\/a> on Monday that he will be introducing a measure to censure Waters for her remarks which, if it passes, would strip her of her position as chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know there are probably 10 to 15 who would love to vote [for censure],\u201d McCarthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/mccarthy-maxine-waters-finds-value-in-violence-democrats-will-own-hers-tlaibs-radical-statements\">said<\/a>. \u201cIt will all come down to the pressure of what Democrats will put on them to just try to vote to table it \u2014 not even to have the discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
