Federal Elections Commission<\/a> that the FEC could not prevent a private group from distributing a film criticizing Hillary Clinton. Distribution of the film during the 2008 Democratic presidential primaries violated the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/107th-congress\/house-bill\/2356\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act<\/a> (BCRA), which prohibited corporate and union groups from engaging in electioneering communications. In ruling for Citizens United, Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote that \u201cno sufficient governmental interest justifies limits on the political speech of nonprofit or for-profit corporations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats criticized the free speech ruling, complaining that corporate money would harm American politics. In all three presidential elections since 2010, the Democratic nominee called for a constitutional amendment that would overturn the ruling. High levels of spending \u201cfundamentally threaten to overwhelm the political process over the long run and drown out the voices of ordinary citizens,\u201d then-President Barack Obama <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2012\/08\/29\/obama-floats-constitutional-amendment-overturning-citizens-united\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Hillary Clinton\u2019s 2016 campaign called for a constitutional amendment that would allow Congress to \u201cestablish common sense rules to protect against the undue influence of billionaires and special interests and to restore the role of average voters in elections,\u201d Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2016\/07\/hillary-clinton-citizens-united-225658\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2015\/05\/28\/citizens-united-president-hillarys-desire-to-pack-courts-to-overturn-scotus-is-surreal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Citizens United President: Hillary\u2019s Desire To Pack Courts To Overturn SCOTUS Is \u2018Surreal\u2019)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Joe Biden\u2019s 2020 campaign went further than either Obama\u2019s or Clinton\u2019s. He <a href=\"https:\/\/joebiden.com\/governmentreform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">called<\/a> for a constitutional amendment that would ban all private donations in federal elections, and \u201crequire candidates for federal office to solely fund their campaigns with public dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"11.331010452962\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Overturning Citizens United isn\u2019t enough. Ridding our politics of big money and corporate special interests demands more. We must go further.<\/p>\n<p>I will introduce a constitutional amendment to get all private dollars out of our federal elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoeBiden\/status\/1184206057649909762?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 15, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Now, however, top Democrats cheer as major <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/11\/major-corporations-oppose-election-integrity-measures-georgia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">corporations<\/a> uniformly oppose election integrity laws across the country. Business leaders from companies including Starbucks, General Motors, and Amazon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/corporations-voting-restrictions-5799f170-d713-4ac4-a34e-edacb9842e1f.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published<\/a> a two page ad in the Washington Post and New York Times following a Zoom call in which they decided that they \u201cfelt very strongly that\u2026 voting restrictions are based on a flawed premise and are dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all should feel a responsibility to defend the right to vote and to oppose any discriminatory legislation or measures that restrict or prevent any eligible voter from having an equal and fair opportunity to cast a ballot,\u201d the ad reads.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"6.7142857142857\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">WE STAND FOR DEMOCRACY \u2014 100s of companies and exec sign this letter opposing \u201cany discriminatory legislation.\u201d Ad appeared in the NYT and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/washingtonpost?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@washingtonpost<\/a> today. w \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/andrewrsorkin?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@andrewrsorkin<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TSPtxjkWhR\">https:\/\/t.co\/TSPtxjkWhR<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bAtS8SyseB\">pic.twitter.com\/bAtS8SyseB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 David Gelles (@dgelles) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dgelles\/status\/1382293992705028100?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 14, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The companies did so in response to a Georgia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.ga.gov\/api\/legislation\/document\/20212022\/201121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bill<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/31\/georgia-voting-bill-absentee-voting-id-requirement-food-water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expands<\/a> voter ID requirements and early voting. Major League Baseball (MLB) <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/02\/biden-manfred-mlb-pressure-all-star-game-atlanta-georgia-elections-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">moved<\/a> its 2021 All Star Game out of Atlanta in response to the measure, following pressure from <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/01\/biden-pressures-mlb-move-all-star-game-atlanta-georgia-voting-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Biden<\/a> and corporate sponsors. Former President Barack Obama <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BarackObama\/status\/1378331478380142593\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cheered<\/a> MLB for \u201c<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">taking a stand on behalf of voting rights for all citizens\u201d after the move.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Biden said he would \u201cstrongly support\u201d the MLB\u2019s move, saying \u201cpeople look to them. They\u2019re leaders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Biden also <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/06\/biden-georgia-boycott-mlb-pga-masters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> it was \u201creassuring\u201d to see these corporations boycott Georgia, but also noted that it hurts the workers.<\/p>\n<p>Stacey Abrams recently <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/staceyabrams\/status\/1381985350793359373\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">applauded<\/a> businesses in Michigan that were opposing election laws in their state. Abrams has <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/staceyabrams\/status\/1378086786598109193\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> that while she respects boycotts, she doesn\u2019t want to see families \u201churt by lost events and jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abrams previously said on April 1 that companies shouldn\u2019t boycott, \u201cyet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/30\/washington-post-joe-biden-four-pinocchios-georgia-voting-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">received<\/a> four \u201cpinocchios\u201d from the Washington Post\u2019s fact-checker after he <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/01\/jen-psaki-georgia-election-law-bill-joe-biden-four-pinocchios-voting-hours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">repeatedly<\/a> and falsely claimed that the law limits voting hours.<\/p>\n<p>Clinton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/03\/31\/politics\/hillary-clinton-filibuster-repeal-voting-rights\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">claimed<\/a> that laws like Georgia\u2019s constitute \u201ca direct constitutional challenge to the rights of citizenship, to the Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendment, to a long line of cases.\u201d The Thirteenth <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.loc.gov\/13th-amendment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amendment<\/a> prohibits slavery, while the Fourteenth <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.loc.gov\/14th-amendment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amendment<\/a> provides all citizens with equal protection of the law.
