Garlan Gudger of Cullman said during the debate, per the outlet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-62 Component-p-0-2-53\">\u201cI think it is an unfair [sic] for biological males to compete and beat females in high school sports. There are biological advantages that men possess just naturally because of genetics,\u201d Gudger said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This is not the first action that the state legislature has taken on transgender issues. Early last month, the Alabama state Senate voted to make transgender hormone therapy and surgery for children a felony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/in-blowout-vote-alabama-senate-makes-hormone-therapy-surgery-for-trans-kids-a-felony-protect-kids\">The Daily Wire<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"27\">\n<p><em>The Alabama state senate voted overwhelmingly this week to make giving children puberty-blockers, hormone therapy, or gender reassignment surgery a felony.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSenators voted 23-4 to approve the measure, dubbed the Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act, sponsored by Republican Senator Shay Shelnutt,\u201d CBS News reported. \u201cThe bill now heads to the state House of Representatives, which has already approved a companion bill.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cChildren aren\u2019t mature enough to make these decisions on surgeries and drugs,\u201d Shelnutt said. \u201cThe whole point is to protect kids.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Democrats and pro-transgender activists were reportedly outraged by the passage of the bill. When faced with the criticism that Republicans were \u201cinfringing\u201d on the ability of people to make their own decisions, Shelnutt noted that the state bans minors from other substances, like alcohol and tobacco.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">North Dakota passed a similar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.nd.gov\/assembly\/67-2021\/documents\/21-0140-06000.pdf\"><span class=\"s1\">bill<\/span><\/a> to the Alabama transgender sports measure that would not allow a public elementary or secondary school to knowingly permit a person of one sex to play on a sports team that is reserved for members of the other sex. However, a female student is still able to participate on teams or events that are reserved for boys. The state senate passed the measure 27-20, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valleynewslive.com\/2021\/04\/15\/north-dakotas-transgender-sports-bill-goes-to-the-governor\/\">Valley News Live<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/15\/us\/politics\/alabama-and-north-dakota-transgender-sports-ban.html\"><span class=\"s1\">The New York Times<\/span><\/a> reported that Dillon Nettles, policy director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Alabama, said the bills are \u201cconsistent with the attacks that we\u2019ve been seeing all across the country towards trans youth and really their families as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese bills are going to have severe negative consequences for the outcomes of trans youth, from their social development to even their ability to build relationships with their classmates and peers,\u201d Nettles said.<\/p>\n<p>As states across the country begin to address the topic of transgenderism, some organizations are speaking out, as well.<\/p>\n<p>The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/ncaa-unequivocally-supports-transgender-student-athletes\">took a position on the topic<\/a> on Monday, stating its support for transgender athletes. In a written <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.org\/about\/resources\/media-center\/news\/ncaa-board-governors-statement-transgender-participation\">statement<\/a>, the organization said, \u201cThe NCAA Board of Governors firmly and unequivocally supports the opportunity for transgender student-athletes to compete in college sports. This commitment is grounded in our values of inclusion and fair competition.\u201d The NCAA explained its policy requiring \u201ctestosterone suppression treatment for transgender women to compete in women\u2019s sports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Supporters of bills banning biological males from women\u2019s sports argue that such laws would ensure women are competing on equal footing with their peers, while opponents say the efforts stem from stereotypes and discrimination. The Alabama legislation now heads to Republican Governor of Alabama Kay Ivey for her signature or veto.
