Jonathan Mattingly, 48, has written a book titled \u201cThe Fight For Truth: The Inside Story Behind the Breonna Taylor Tragedy\u201d to be published by Tennessee-based Post Hill Press, which reportedly has a deal with Simon &amp; Schuster to publish their authors\u2019 books. After Post Hill Press announced the publication of Mattingly\u2019s book on Thursday, Simon &amp; Schuster issued a statement saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"8\">\n<p><em>Like much of the American public, earlier today Simon &amp; Schuster learned of plans by distribution client Post Hill Press to publish a book by Jonathan Mattingly. We have subsequently decided not to be involved in the distribution of this book.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.6433333333333\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The company announced Thursday night that it would no longer be distributing a book by Jonathan Mattingly, one of the Louisville police officers who shot Breonna Taylor in a raid that ended in the 26-year-old&#8217;s death last March.\u200b  <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/td76S1VUKd\">https:\/\/t.co\/td76S1VUKd<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Entertainment Weekly (@EW) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EW\/status\/1382975822814937088?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 16, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courier-journal.com\/story\/news\/local\/breonna-taylor\/2021\/04\/15\/publisher-pulls-out-cops-tell-all-book-breonna-taylor-shooting\/7248810002\/\">Courier-Journal<\/a> noted:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"20.327150084317\">\n<p><em>Mattingly fired six rounds during the March 13, 2020, attempted search of Taylor\u2019s apartment, shooting Taylor. He had been shot in the thigh&nbsp;moments earlier by Taylor\u2019s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, who later said he thought intruders were breaking in. Mattingly required emergency surgery to repair his severed femoral artery.&nbsp;Another officer on scene, Myles Cosgrove, fired the fatal shot, the FBI concluded. \u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sign.moveon.org\/petitions\/simon-schuster-cancel-your-book-deal-with-breonna-taylor-s-killer\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\">MoveOn.org petition<\/a>&nbsp;demanding Simon &amp; Schuster cancel the deal generated more than 20,000 signatures, and the social media backlash to news of Mattingly\u2019s book was swift.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In January, Yvette Gentry, Interim Chief of the Louisville Metro Police Department, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courier-journal.com\/story\/news\/local\/breonna-taylor\/2021\/01\/06\/two-louisville-detectives-officially-fired-in-breonna-taylor-shooting\/4125160001\/\">exonerated Mattingly<\/a> in the Breonna Taylor incident. In September 2020, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whas11.com\/article\/news\/investigations\/breonna-taylor-case\/breonna-taylor-decision-mattingly-cosgrove-hankison-charges\/417-a72dd996-5e10-499c-b3bb-49672331d9e5\">said<\/a> Mattingly and officer Myles Cosgrove were justified in their use of force when Taylor was killed; he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2020\/09\/23\/breonna-taylor-announcement-grand-jury-louisville-police-case-updates\/5814876002\/\">attested<\/a> that they announced themselves as&nbsp;police officers before the incident occurred. Cameron noted that Mattingly was the only officer to enter Taylor\u2019s apartment, where he was shot by Taylor\u2019s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker.<\/p>\n<p>Mattingly said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savannahnow.com\/story\/news\/2020\/10\/21\/breonna-taylor-shooting-had-nothing-to-do-with-race-officer-says-in-exclusive-interview\/43134771\/\">October 2020<\/a>, \u201cEverybody knows the police knock. When that took place for that long \u2014 and they had that much time to think and react and formulate a plan \u2014 I don\u2019t know he didn\u2019t hear us. We were talking 20 feet away through a thin metal door. So, my opinion, yes, he heard. But I\u2019m not the end-all, be-all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mattingly slammed Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, saying he had begged the mayor\u2019s&nbsp;office to release evidence or factual information, but the office informed him they didn\u2019t want to \u201cset precedent\u201d for the future.<\/p>\n<p>Mattingly said, \u201cMy response to that was, \u2018So you\u2019re willing to let the city burn down to not set a precedent for another case?\u2019 A lot of (the) flames that have come up, a lot of this stuff could have been diverted. Now, would people still have a problem with it? Yes. But I think with the truth coming out, then you wouldn\u2019t have as much distrust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cI didn\u2019t understand the racial injustices as a kid because my friends were black. Just, it didn\u2019t click to me that there was this, this visceral hate out there. I didn\u2019t know that.
