Newsome earlier this week called for an independent investigation into Cullors\u2019 finances after she reportedly spent millions on new properties.<\/p>\n<p>BLM Greater New York is unaffiliated with the national BLM group and is illegally operating under the BLM name, the foundation argued in its letters to Newsome.<\/p>\n<p>Newsome \u201cis not and has never been a part of the official Black Lives Matter organization, but continues to use BLM\u2019s name even after sending him multiple cease and desist letters. Therefore, any mention of him as a leader is not factual,\u201d and outside spokesman for the BLM Global Network Foundation said. \u201cOnly BLM chapters who adhere to BLM\u2019s principles and code of ethics are permitted to use the BLM name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The national BLM group does not have legal rights over the Black Lives Matter name. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jdsupra.com\/legalnews\/blacklivesmatter-a-trademark-or-a-8653602\/#:~:text=Like%20the%20applications%20filed%20by,Matter%E2%80%9D%20marks%20or%20the%20movement\">rejected<\/a> six applications from the group to trademark the phrase.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Newsome <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/blm-of-nyc-calls-for-independent-investigation-of-blm-co-founder-after-3-2-million-home-buying-binge\">called<\/a> for an audit of Cullors\u2019 finances after news broke that Cullors has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/cashing-in-blm-co-founder-goes-on-real-estate-buying-binge-snagging-four-homes-totaling-millions-of-dollars-report\">spent<\/a> about $3.2 million buying four properties since 2016. The prominent Black Lives Matter leader purchased a $1.4 million property near Los Angeles and a $415,000 \u201ccustom ranch\u201d near Atlanta within the past year.<\/p>\n<p>The L.A. and Atlanta purchases came after the publication of Cullors memoir, \u201cWhen They Call You a Terrorist,\u201d and after she signed a \u201ca multi-platform\u201d deal with Warner Bros. Television Group.<\/p>\n<p>BLM Global Network Foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Blklivesmatter\/status\/1382033380888481794\">responded<\/a> to allegations of impropriety surrounding Cullors\u2019 lavish spending Tuesday, claiming that the allegations put Cullors and her family \u201cin harm\u2019s way\u201d and \u201ccontinues a tradition of terror by white supremacists against Black activists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When approached about his use of the BLM name, Newsome told DCNF, \u201cSo the issue has become my affiliation and not the use of funds \u2026 Interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis movement belongs to the people,\u201d Newsome said. \u201cIt is for the people and by the people. It is the people that take to the streets and march in the name of BLM. No one has ownership of that. It is the equivalent of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. claiming ownership of the civil rights movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Numerous local BLM groups have complained about the transparency of the national BLM organization and expressed concern that millions in charitable donations to the group were not being dispersed fairly. In November, 10 local chapters accused the national group of hiding \u201cuntold millions of dollars.\u201d As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/local-blm-chapters-accuse-national-foundation-of-hiding-untold-millions-of-dollars-in-donations-from-grassroots-activists\">The Daily Wire<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"30.697396963124\">\n<p><em>Black Lives Matter chapters in Chicago, Denver, Hudson Valley in New York, Indianapolis, New Jersey, Oklahoma City, Philadelphia, San Diego, Vancouver in Washington state, and Washington, D.C., signed onto a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blmchapterstatement.com\/\">statement<\/a>&nbsp;issued Monday condemning the Black Lives Matter Global Network (BLMGN) Foundation. The foundation, the statement said, has taken major actions without input from chapter leaders and refused until recently to make any effort to distribute millions of dollars-worth of donations to grassroots activists.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSince the establishment of BLMGN, our chapters have consistently raised concerns about financial transparency, decision making, and accountability,\u201d the statement says. \u201cDespite years of effort, no acceptable internal process of accountability has ever been produced by BLMGN and these recent events have undermined the efforts of chapters seeking to democratize its processes and resources.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
