Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) expressed his outrage over Democrats\u2019 effort to expand the Supreme Court. In a series of tweets on Thursday, he called the legislation a dangerous, radical idea.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If successful, this would inevitably lead to changing the number of Supreme Court Justices every time there is a shift in power.  <\/p>\n<p>Over time that would surely make the Supreme Court a political football, destroying its effectiveness and independence.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Lindsey Graham (@LindseyGrahamSC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LindseyGrahamSC\/status\/1382711853625802759?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 15, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIf they try to expand the court to dilute a conservative majority, the next time a Republican is in power, will we change the number?\u201d Graham asked. \u201cYou make the Supreme Court basically political football, it loses its independence, its consistency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The senator said he is worried about the stability of the court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a bad idea when FDR tried to do it,\u201d Graham added. \u201cIt\u2019s a bad idea now, and I\u2019m hoping some Democrats will see that this will over time, undermine the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This came as the proposal received an unenthusiastic response from Republicans and top Democrats, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who expressed strong reservations about the legislation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2398999\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2398999\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2398999\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/fb_image-2372.jpeg\" alt=\"House minority leader Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, speaks during a press conference at Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington, DC on November 6, 2018. - Americans started voting Tuesday in critical midterm elections that mark the first major voter test of US President Donald Trump&#039;s controversial presidency, with control of Congress at stake. (Photo by MANDEL NGAN\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if that\u2019s a good idea or bad idea,\u201d Pelosi said.<\/p>\n<p>Graham also noted that Justice Stephen Breyer, a Democrat appointee, disagreed with court packing and has spoken out against it saying, \u201cthese considerations convince me that it is wrong to think of the court as just another political institution and it is doubly wrong to think of its members as junior league politicians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), one of the bill\u2019s sponsors leading the effort, said the Republicans politicized the court, undermining its legitimacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way we repair it is straight forward. We undue the damage that Republicans have done by restoring balance,\u201d Markey explained. \u201cAnd we do it by adding 4 seats to the court to create a 13 member Supreme Court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graham argued that changing the number of justices on the court does tremendous damage to the court itself.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) also weighed in, saying the legislation is a \u201cfull assault on the independence of the federal judiciary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a separate interview on Thursday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) added packing the court defies what Americans stand for.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Packing the court goes against everything we believe as Americans.<\/p>\n<p>But make no mistake: this is about power and control. Everything we believed in our Constitution, the idea of fairness,\u201d McCarthy stated. \u201cIt goes against what Joe Biden, back in the day when he was senator, would say ever to do. But they only want to do it for power and to continue to have control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graham vowed to vote against any legislation regarding expanding the court.
