He spoke out against court packing in 1983 when he was a United States senator, criticizing former President Ronald Reagan\u2019s attempt to replace members of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/flashback-biden-called-court-packing-a-bonehead-idea-in-1983\">according to Fox News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Biden compared Reagan\u2019s efforts to former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt\u2019s attempt to add six justices to the Supreme Court in 1937, the publication reported. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/15\/democrats-joe-biden-supreme-court\/\">(RELATED: Democrats Introduce Bill That Would Add Four Justices To The Supreme Court: REPORT)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Roosevelt clearly had the right to send to the United States Senate and the United States Congress a proposal to pack the court. It was totally within his right to do that,\u201d Biden said at the time. \u201cHe violated no law. (MANDEL NGAN\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Biden&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/10\/22\/biden-supreme-court-packing-commission-180-days\/\">refused to address whether he would pack the court<\/a>&nbsp;during the 2020 presidential election, insisting that he would not provide such an answer until at least 180 days into his presidency and after he had received a recommendation from a bipartisan commission on changing the Supreme Court.&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/10\/08\/joe-biden-kamala-harris-pack-supreme-court-refuse-answer-debate\/\">(RELATED: Here Are 7 Times Biden And Harris Refused To Say If They\u2019re Going To Pack The Supreme Court)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf elected, what I will do is I\u2019ll put together a national commission \u2014 a bipartisan commission \u2026 and I will ask them to, over 180 days, come back to me with recommendations as to how to reform the court system \u2026 it\u2019s not about court packing,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/10\/22\/biden-supreme-court-packing-commission-180-days\/\">said in October<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cThere\u2019s a number of alternatives that go well beyond court packing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/04\/09\/executive-order-on-the-establishment-of-the-presidential-commission-on-the-supreme-court-of-the-united-states\/\">establishment<\/a> of a commission to study the impact of expanding the Supreme Court on April 9.<\/p>\n<p>The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
