Burgess Owens to a member of the Klu Klux Klan (KKK).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/opinion\/bagley\/2021\/04\/08\/bagley-cartoon-sounds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cartoon<\/a> shows Owens pointing toward the southern border with the caption, \u201cThey are coming to your neighborhoods!\u201d On the right side of the cartoon, a member of the KKK holds a torch and points toward Owens, saying, \u201cThey are coming to your neighborhoods!\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"11.458598726115\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We have heard of \u201cmansplaining\u201d now we have \u201cwhitesplaining\u201d from a white man comparing a black man, who grew up under Jim Crow laws, to the KKK.<\/p>\n<p>Awful tone deaf <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sltrib?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@sltrib<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Patbagley?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Patbagley<\/a>. Expect an apology but I won\u2019t hold my breathe. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NESEchhFEf\">pic.twitter.com\/NESEchhFEf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Burgess Owens (@BurgessOwens) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BurgessOwens\/status\/1382715793800978435?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 15, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Owens called the paper \u201ctone deaf\u201d and \u201cracist\u201d in a statement to the Daily Caller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was raised int he 1960\u2019s Deep South during a time when the KKK terrorized my neighborhood and the color of my skin literally dictated where I went to school. It was a time when racism was defined by arrogance and demeaning the character of any person of color,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/19\/u-s-rep-burgess-owens-explains-racist-past-of-gun-control-on-house-floor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Owens<\/a> told the Caller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can try to hide behind a newspaper and fake \u2018wokeness,\u2019 but this is it,\u201d he continued. \u201cDon\u2019t let the racist and tone deaf Salt Lake Tribune cast a bad light on our great state of inclusion. It does not represent the people of Utah or my constituents in District 4.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Utah Delegation issued a joint statement condemning the graphic as \u201crepugnant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Salt Lake Tribune recently published a repugnant \u2018cartoon\u2019 comparing Congressman Burgess Owens, our esteemed colleague and only black member of the Utah delegation, to a member of the Klu Klux Klan,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"2.5217391304348\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"und\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/y4qjneb98w\">https:\/\/t.co\/y4qjneb98w<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/d6S0AnpIdG\">pic.twitter.com\/d6S0AnpIdG<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mike Lee (@SenMikeLee) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenMikeLee\/status\/1382824977993388032?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 15, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis racially charged, reverse political statement is beyond the pale. We ask that The Salt Lake Tribune immediately take down this horrific image, issue a formal apology, and hold themselves to a higher standard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republican Colorado Rep. Ken Buck called the cartoon \u201cabsolutely disgusting\u201d while Florida Republican Rep. Bryon Donalds defended <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/15\/sheila-jackson-lee-bill-reparations-house-judiciary-committee-burgess-owens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Owens<\/a> on Twitter.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"10.820717131474\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Comparing a black man, who grew up under Jim Crow laws, to the KKK is absolutely disgusting, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sltrib?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@sltrib<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is unacceptable. Like all good opinion journalists, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Patbagley?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Patbagley<\/a> is just saying \u2013 and drawing \u2013 what people were already thinking but hadn\u2019t yet put into words. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PyDINVWYnl\">https:\/\/t.co\/PyDINVWYnl<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 George Pyle (@DebateState) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DebateState\/status\/1382749139906097153?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 15, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It is unclear which comments triggered the cartoon, or which comments Bagley is referring to.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Caller has reached out to Pat Bagley and The Salt Lake Tribune for comment but did not receive a response at the time of publication.<\/p>\n<p>Owens has been outspoken about the border crisis, calling the scene chaotic in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/kslnewsradio.com\/1946455\/owens-mexico-border\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KSL<\/a>. He also discussed human <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/26\/human-traffickers-cartel-members-ted-cruz-firsthand-look-senate-border-trip-mexico-illegal-immigration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">trafficking<\/a> issues, along with illegal drugs coming across the border.<\/p>\n<p>Republican North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/02\/03\/black-lieutenant-governor-criticizes-cartoon-republicans-kkk-members\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">slammed<\/a> a similar cartoon in February that depicted Republicans on the State Board of Education as members of the KKK. Robinson, the state\u2019s first African American Lt. Governor, criticized WRAL.com for the cartoon that depicted Republicans as members of the KKK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the second day of Black History Month, the first Black lieutenant governor of North Carolina has been portrayed as [racist],\u201d Robinson said during a press conference, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/537157-north-carolinas-black-lt-governor-criticizes-cartoon-depicting-him-as-kkk-member\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Hill<\/a>. \u201cThat you would portray a Black man, just because he\u2019s in the GOP, as a Klansman \u2026 the hypocrisy is mind-numbing, folks.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Salt Lake Tribune sparked outrage after it ran an editorial cartoon comparing Republican Utah Rep.
