On this date in 1947, Robinson broke baseball\u2019s color barrier when he made his historic MLB debut.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"6.6438356164384\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today we pay homage to the legacy and courage of a trailblazer, Jackie Robinson. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Jackie42?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Jackie42<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mxaidbah9E\">pic.twitter.com\/mxaidbah9E<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 MLB (@MLB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MLB\/status\/1382698147097550854?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 15, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cJackie Robinson Day\u201d is celebrated at ballparks around the country as a day to remember Robinson and what he went through in order to pave the way for players of color everywhere.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Robinson would go on to have a ten-year, Hall of Fame career, winning the NL Rookie of the Year in 1947, NL MVP in 1949, and appearing in the All-Star Game six times.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These three stories exemplify the courageous, groundbreaking nature of Robinson\u2019s storied career.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cThe Handshake of the Century\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Before Robinson made his Major League debut, he played for the Montreal Royals \u2014 the top minor league team in the Brooklyn Dodgers organization. On April 18, 1946 Robinson took the field against the Jersey City Giants in Jersey City, New Jersey.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Robinson had struggled during spring training. He\u2019d hurt his throwing arm and was having a difficult time at the plate, all while dealing with unending bigotry from fans and teammates alike. The pressure to perform was overwhelming as he attempted to pave the way for players of color moving forward.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In his second at-bat, Robinson hit a fastball over the left field stands for a home run. Teammate George Shuba shakes his hand.\" width=\"403\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2021\/04\/GettyImages-514867316-300x234.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2021\/04\/GettyImages-514867316-737x576.jpg 737w, https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2021\/04\/GettyImages-514867316-768x600.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2021\/04\/GettyImages-514867316.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 403px) 100vw, 403px\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-210950\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Bettman via Getty Images<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>The \u201chandshake of the century,\u201d as it came to be known, is memorialized by sculptor Marc Mellon in a seven-foot statue in Shuba\u2019s hometown of Youngstown, Ohio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWell, we\u2019ve had other important handshakes, internationally and here at home,\u201d Mellon told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/jackie-robinson-george-shuba-and-the-handshake-of-the-century\/\">CBS Sunday Morning<\/a> in September of 2020, \u201cbut this was a harbinger of the civil rights movement to come.\u201d<\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Robinson\u2019s Major League Debut<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Robinson broke the Major League color barrier on April 15, 1947 as his Brooklyn Dodgers took on the Boston Braves. Robinson went 0-3 with a run scored in a 5-3 Dodgers victory.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Robinson famously said, \u201cIf they are all like this, I\u2019m going to have a hard time making this league.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"14.342318059299\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">5) During the game, Robinson is called out at first, hits a fly ball to left, hits into a double play, and only makes it to base when a bunt is mishandled. Did Yankees catcher Yogi Berra get his glove down before Robinson touched home plate?
