The DOJ investigation&nbsp;<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/30\/us\/politics\/matt-gaetz-sex-trafficking-investigation.html\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>reportedly began last year<\/i><\/span><\/a><i>&nbsp;and \u201cgrew out of an open investigation into\u201d Joel Greenberg, a former tax collector \u201cwho was indicted last year on a charge of sex trafficking and other counts,\u201d according to The New York Times.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cMatt Gaetz is the same as any American, he\u2019s innocent until proven guilty,\u201d McCarthy said regarding the allegations made against the 38 year-old congressman. \u201cThere\u2019s no charges against him yet. If a charge comes forward, that will be dealt with at that time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">McCarthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=P_JJG9hVBgI\"><span class=\"s1\">confirmed<\/span><\/a> that he has spoken with Representative Gaetz, who has told the minority leader that he is innocent. McCarthy also said that he explained the rules of the conference to Gaetz and that they would take action if something were to come out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/kevin-mccarthy-174d52d81c1c985ad30f10996e4e855e\">The Associated Press<\/a><\/span> reported that McCarthy was asked whether or not Republicans would take action against Gaetz if more details are revealed before charges are made. McCarthy answered, \u201cThat\u2019s a hypothetical question. I\u2019ll deal with whatever issue as it comes. As of right now, Matt Gaetz says he is innocent, there\u2019s an investigation going on, and I\u2019ll let the investigation take care of itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Charges have yet to be filed against Gaetz and he has publicly stated that he is innocent. At a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politicians-in-crisis-refuse-to-resign-16046aff55900e97f59aec9aa5153df6\"><span class=\"s1\">speech<\/span><\/a> on April 9th in Miami, the congressman said, \u201cI have not yet begun to fight \u2026 I\u2019m built for the battle and I\u2019m not going anywhere \u2026 The smears against me range from distortions of my personal life to wild \u2014 and I mean wild \u2014 conspiracy theories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Gaetz has also claimed that a former Department of Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-gaetz-names-ex-doj-official-he-claims-tried-to-extort-millions-promised-biden-pardon\"><span class=\"s1\">official tried to extort him<\/span><\/a> and members of his family, which the DOJ official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-ex-doj-official-on-gaetzs-allegations-distracting-from-apparent-imminent-indictment\"><span class=\"s1\">has denied and said is a distraction attempt by Gaetz<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last week, the House Ethics Committee also launched an investigation into the allegations made against the Florida congressman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a joint written <a href=\"https:\/\/ethics.house.gov\/sites\/ethics.house.gov\/files\/documents\/Press%20Release_178.pdf\"><span class=\"s1\">statement<\/span><\/a>, members of the committee said:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"27\">\n<p class=\"p4\"><i>The Committee is aware of public allegations that Representative Matt Gaetz may have engaged in sexual misconduct and\/or illicit drug use, shared inappropriate images or videos on the House floor, misused state identification records, converted campaign funds to personal use, and\/or accepted a bribe, improper gratuity, or impermissible gift, in violation of House Rules, laws, or other standards of conduct. The Committee, pursuant to Committee Rule 18(a), has begun an investigation and will gather additional information regarding the allegations.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><i>The Committee notes that the mere fact that it is investigating these allegations, and publicly disclosing its review, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred, or reflect any judgment on behalf of the Committee.
