Just ask the Walt Disney Company, which has apparently pulled its release of Beauty and the Beast in Malaysia after film censors there demanded the studio cut what director Bill Condon called an \u2018exclusively gay moment\u2019 from the film,\u201d wrote <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2017\/03\/the-dilemma-of-a-woke-disney\"><span>Vanity Fair<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWalt Disney has shelved the release of its new movie \u2018Beauty and the Beast\u2019 in mainly Muslim Malaysia, even though film censors said Tuesday it had been approved with a minor cut involving a \u2018gay moment,\u2019\u201d added the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/25ccb88b4c3b4184a67087380b61585b\"><span>Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>March 2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/disney-ceo-signals-withdrawal-georgia-over-amanda-prestigiacomo\">late March<\/a>, \u201c<\/span><span>CEO of the Walt Disney Co. Bob Iger signaled a pull-out in Georgia over the state\u2019s new \u2018heartbeat\u2019 legislation, which bans abortion after unborn babies\u2019 heartbeats are detected (around six-weeks gestation).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI rather doubt we will,\u201d Iger <\/span><a href=\"about:blank\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><span> Reuters when asked about future production in Georgia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI think many people who work for us will not want to work there, and we will have to heed their wishes in that regard. Right now we are watching it very carefully,\u201d the CEO continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI don\u2019t see how it\u2019s practical for us to continue to shoot there\u201d if the law goes into effect, Iger added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>November 2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Disney announced that they would be adding warnings to their content regarding the use of \u201cracist stereotypes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Daily Telegraph <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/technology\/2019\/11\/14\/disney-warns-racism-old-films-lady-tramp\/\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span> in November 2019 that \u201cThe films, mostly from the Forties and Fifties, now come with a warning about offensive tropes on the US company\u2019s new streaming service Disney Plus, which launched on Tuesday.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In addition to adding Disclaimers, Disney has also decided not to release \u201c<\/span><i><span>Song of the South<\/span><\/i><span>, a movie set in Georgia after the American Civil War,\u201d which has been \u201ccriticized for its depictions of black people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/disney-plus-content-warning-outdated-cultural-depictions-song-of-the-south\/\"><span>Disclaimer<\/span><\/a><span>, which cannot be skipped, reads as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p><i><span>This program includes negative depictions and\/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together. Disney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>July 2020<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Walt Disney Corporation announced that they had partnered with Colin Kaepernick, and as part of the overall deal would \u201c<\/span><span>produce a series about the life\u201d of the football player and activist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDisney will get first crack at new projects from Kaepernick\u2019s Ra Vision Media, which produces work that explores race and social injustice. That will begin with the project about Kaepernick\u2019s own life, that of a star athlete turned civil-rights activist,\u201d reported <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-07-06\/disney-teams-with-kaepernick-in-ex-nfl-star-s-latest-media-deal?utm_campaign=socialflow-organic&amp;cmpid=socialflow-twitter-businessweek&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_content=businessweek&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;sref=W6GJF3MS\"><span>Bloomberg<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDisney hails the deal as part of a broader effort to develop stories from the perspective of Black and Brown communities. Kaepernick\u2019s stance has turned him into a face of the civil-rights movement \u2014 and without an NFL career to pursue \u2014 he is using his platform to tell stories,\u201d Bloomberg added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2020-07-12\/hollywood-decides-being-woke-is-good-for-business-for-now\"><span>Bloomberg<\/span><\/a><span> report, Disney will be working with Jemele Hill \u2014 who was previously suspended by Disney subsidiary ESPN \u2014 to produce the series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>July 2020<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>ABC, which is owned by Disney, announced that they would be rebooting \u201cThe Wonder Years,\u201d \u201c<\/span><span>a beloved coming-of-age sitcom about the U.S. middle class,\u201d but telling the story of a black family in Alabama.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cABC has only committed to produce a pilot of the show, which means it may never get on the air. But ABC and its owner <\/span><span>Walt Disney Co.<\/span><span> have made telling more Black stories a priority following the killing of George Floyd, which brought a wave of protests about racial injustice,\u201d reported <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-07-08\/abc-revives-the-wonder-years-with-black-family-at-the-center\"><span>Bloomberg<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>September 2020<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Disney came under fire from critics after the live-action version of \u201cMulan\u201d was filmed in China\u2019s Xinjiang province, where over one million people \u2014 mostly Uighur Muslims \u2014 are reportedly being forcibly detained in so-called \u201cre-education camps.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>The film was already the <\/span>target of a boycott<span> after its lead actress backed a crackdown on Hong Kong protesters,\u201d noted the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-54064654\"><span>BBC<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Critics even pointed out that Disney thanks a number of government entities in Xinjiang during the movie\u2019s credits, \u201cincluding the public security bureau in the city of Turpan and the \u2018publicity department of CPC Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomy Region Committee.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"13.518005540166\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Mulan specifically thank the publicity department of CPC Xinjiang uyghur autonomous region committee in the credits. <\/p>\n<p>You know, the place where the cultural genocide is happening.<\/p>\n<p>They filmed extensively in Xinjiang, which the subtitles call \u201cNorthwest China\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BoycottMulan?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BoycottMulan<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mba3oMYDvV\">pic.twitter.com\/mba3oMYDvV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jeannette Ng \u5433\u5fd7\u9e97 (@jeannette_ng) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jeannette_ng\/status\/1302767969466974208?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 7, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>September 2020<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>ABC \u2014 which is owned by the Disney Corporation \u2014 unveiled an \u201cambitious\u201d set of inclusion standards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>ABC is putting in place a detailed new set of inclusion standards to ensure the network\u2019s programming and sets accurately reflects society,\u201d according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/live-feed\/abc-unveils-ambitious-set-of-inclusion-standards-exclusive\"><span>The Hollywood Reporter<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOverseen by exec vp development and content strategy Simran Sethi, who has been working on the guidelines for the past year alongside ABC entertainment president Karey Burke, the standards aim to increase inclusion of underrepresented groups onscreen, in writing and directing jobs, and below the line,\u201d the report added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>October 2020<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Disney launched their \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storiesmatter.thewaltdisneycompany.com\/\"><span>Stories Matter<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d campaign, noting that, \u201cStories shape how we see ourselves and everyone around us. So as storytellers, we have the power and responsibility to not only uplift and inspire, but also consciously, purposefully and relentlessly champion the spectrum of voices and perspectives in our world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBecause happily ever after doesn\u2019t just happen. It takes effort. Effort we are making,\u201d the Stories Matter page proclaims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>As part of our ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion, we are in the process of reviewing our library and adding advisories to content that includes negative depictions or mistreatment of people or cultures. Rather than removing this content, we see an opportunity to spark conversation and open dialogue on history that affects us all. We also want to acknowledge that some communities have been erased or forgotten altogether, and we\u2019re committed to giving voice to their stories as well,\u201d the page explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>January 2021<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Disney moved to actively censor <\/span><span>\u201cfour of their classic films from the Disney+ accounts of children under age seven, citing what they described as the \u2018negative depictions and\/or mistreatment of people or cultures.\u2019\u201d Dumbo, Peter Pan, Swiss Family Robinson, and The Aristocats were no longer available for these users, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9179987\/Disney-blocks-sevens-watching-racist-Peter-Pan-Dumbo-Aristocats.html\"><span>The Mail on Sunday<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Additional titles were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/disney-adds-trigger-warnings-to-these-classics-now-hidden-from-children-under-seven-years-old\"><span>hidden<\/span><\/a><span> from younger viewers, including Fantasia, Lady and the Tramp, and The Jungle Book.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>February 2021<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Gina Carano, who has since joined the Daily Wire, was fired by Disney \u201cover a social media post that Disney-owned production company Lucasfilm said was \u2018denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe former Disney star was cut from her role on \u2018The Mandalorian\u2019 earlier this week in a move that the mass media company had reportedly been planning for months over right-wing views Carano has expressed over social media,\u201d reported the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/gina-carano-to-produce-and-star-in-upcoming-film-for-the-daily-wire\"><span>Daily Wire<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Disney officially cut ties with Carano over an image the actress posted to her Instagram depicting a Jewish woman running from Nazi guards with the caption:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"13\">\n<p><em><span>Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors\u2026even by children.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span>\u201cBecause history is edited, most people today don\u2019t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cAs Carano has been an outspoken supporter of former president Donald Trump and has often complained about backlash against her conservative opinions, many critics took the post as her equating Republicans with Jews in Nazi Germany,\u201d The Washington Post <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2021\/02\/11\/gina-carano-mandalorian-star-wars\/\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cThe post has since been deleted, but not before fans captured the moment and shared it widely. Critics called for the actress to be fired for her online rhetoric under the hashtag #FireGinaCarano, which trended on Twitter on Wednesday.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>March 2021<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>As explained by The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/report-disney-shelves-gina-carano-guest-appearance-on-bear-grylls-natgeo-show\"><span>Daily Wire<\/span><\/a><span>, Disney \u201c<\/span><span>reportedly shelved the actress and former MMA fighter\u2019s appearance on Bear Grylls reality show, which appears on the Disney-owned National Geographic, or \u2018NatGeo\u2019 network.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>April 2021<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Walt Disney Television\u2019s chairman of entertainment Dana Walden admitted in April that ABC \u2014 which is owned by Disney \u2014 passed on several \u201cwell-written scripts\u201d because they lacked \u201cdiversity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWalden even bragged about passing on a script because it centered around a white family, only adding racial diversity through neighbors and other supporting characters,\u201d reported <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/disney-admits-passing-on-scripts-for-diversity-we-said-pass-on-show-about-white-family\"><span>The Daily Wire<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI will tell you for the first time we received some incredibly well-written scripts that did not satisfy our standards in terms of inclusion, and we passed on them,\u201d Walden <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/entertainment\/disney-entertainment-chief-dana-walden-says-abc-passed-on-incredibly-well-written-scripts-because-they-lacked-diversity\/\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><span> Women in Focus panel moderator Janice Min.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Ian Haworth is an Editor and Writer for The Daily Wire.
