Ted Cruz (R-Texas) fired back at Justice Department nominee Kristen Clarke after she denied being anti-police. At her confirmation hearing on Wednesday, the Republican grilled Clarke on her June op-ed titled: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/i-prosecuted-police-killings-defund-police-strategic-opinion-1510018\">I Prosecuted Police Killings. Defund the Police, but Be Strategic<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cruz said the article begins by claiming last summer\u2019s left-wing riots \u201copened up the space for transformative policy discussion\u201d and \u201csurged a unifying call for the Black Lives Matter movement.\u201d Clarke attempted to dance around the question, but Cruz asserted these were her words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you really believe \u2018defund the police\u2019 is a unifying call?\u201d Cruz questioned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t support defund the police,\u201d Clarke claimed in response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m reading from your article, do you disagree with your article?\u201d the Texas senator pressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmidst the demonstrations and protests, I wanted to provide a different perspective,\u201d Clarke responded.<\/p>\n<p>Cruz added, it was \u201castonishing\u201d for Clarke to deny this while under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">WATCH: Sen. I find that astonishing &amp; \u2026 not credible \u2026 3 paragraphs in your article, you begin with the words &#8216;We must invest less in police.'&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/w7QlpkSNCF\">pic.twitter.com\/w7QlpkSNCF<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Steve Guest (@SteveGuest) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SteveGuest\/status\/1382405114946846722?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 14, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cYou say you don\u2019t support defunding the police, you said it twice,\u201d Cruz noted. \u201cBut the title of your article is: \u2018Defund the police.\u2019 So you believe you were wrong last year when you called for defunding police and investing less in police?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a poor title chosen by the editor,\u201d Clarke alleged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just the title, it\u2019s your text: \u2018We must invest less in police.\u2019 Three paragraphs should agree with those words. Do you agree with them today?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout the power of the purse string, I wrote those words,\u201d Clarke stated.<\/p>\n<p>Cruz said her remarks were simply false. He also pointed out how Clarke\u2019s article blatantly called on the U.S. to take money from police departments and redistribute those funds to other government services, such as social support in schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree paragraphs in your article, you begin with the words: We must invest less in police,\u201d Cruz said. \u201cAnd you just told this committee under oath [that] you don\u2019t support investing less in police. How do you square those?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I may, senator,\u201d Clarke said. \u201cI support the fact that [Joe Biden] is committing 300 million new dollars for the cops\u2019 program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/joebiden.com\/justice\/\">Biden Plan for Strengthening America\u2019s Commitment to Justice<\/a>\u2018 has claimed it will \u201celiminate the death penalty, reduce the number of people incarcerated and double the amount of social workers in schools.\u201d Not to mention, it will also \u201celiminate mandatory minimums, throw out solitary confinement in most cases and re-focus the entire criminal justice system on redemption instead of consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, federal funds would apparently be contingent upon the willingness of police departments to comply with the plan.<\/p>\n<p>As for the Texas senator\u2019s final argument against Clarke, Cruz pointed to her alleged history of celebrating the murders of police officers. He cited a report, which detailed her efforts as an undergrad at Columbia Law School to organize a conference with a panel of speakers who praised a police officer killer by calling him a \u201cpolitical prisoner.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Sen.
