Dr. Fauci has said Americans need to continue with COVID precautions, including mask-wearing, social distancing, and large gatherings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Fauci, when is the time? When do Americans get their freedom back?\u201d Jordan asked during a House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis hearing.<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) head, those precautions need to remain in place until \u201cthe level of infection\u201d throughout the country improves. Jordan asked for a tangible number.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had \u201915 days to slow the spread\u2019 turned into one year of lost liberty,\u201d Jordan fired back. \u201cWhat metrics, what measures, what has to happen before Americans get more freedoms?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The goal, according to Dr. Fauci, is to \u201cget as many people vaccinated as quickly as we possibly can.\u201d That would help lower the number of COVID cases in the U.S. so it\u2019s not a \u201cthreat,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat determines when? What measure?\u201d Jordan asked. \u201cAre we just going to continue this forever? When, when do we get to the point, what measure, what standard, objective outcome, do we have to reach before Americans get their liberties and freedoms back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re looking at it as liberty and freedom. I look at it as a public health measure to prevent people from dying and going to the hospital,\u201d Fauci said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t think Americans\u2019 liberties have been threatened over the last year, Dr. Fauci? They\u2019ve been assaulted!\u201d Jordan shot back. \u201cTheir liberties have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Fauci reiterated his stance that he views what\u2019s taking place as a \u201cpublic health measure,\u201d not as a \u201cliberties issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think the Constitution is suspended during a virus, during a pandemic?\u201d the congressman asked. \u201cIt\u2019s certainly not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Fauci said the level of infection across the country is so high that there\u2019s a probability of another \u201csurge\u201d taking place.<\/p>\n<p>Congressman Jordan reminded Dr. Fauci that American\u2019s First Amendment rights, including the right to attend church and freedom of the press have been \u201cassaulted\u201d over the last year. He highlighted the varying COVID restrictions in states, ranging from curfews in Ohio to a ban on gatherings in Vermont.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan also pointed to pictures on the wall behind him of overcrowded Border Patrol facilities. \u201cThese very picture that Rep. Scalise just showed you and talked about, guess what? The press isn\u2019t allowed in those facilities. The Biden administration won\u2019t let the press in there [because of COVID] \u2026,\u201d he said<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Fauci took issue with the points Jordan made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re making this a personal thing and it isn\u2019t,\u201d Fauci said. \u201c\u2026 My recommendations are not a personal recommendation. It\u2019s based on the CDC guidance, which is \u2013\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jordan fired back, saying the NIAID head has failed to provide specific metrics for when life can go back to normal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now we have about 60,000 cases of infections a day, which is a very large risk for a surge. We\u2019re not talking about liberties. We\u2019re talking about a pandemic that has killed 560,000 Americans,\u201d Dr. Fauci said.<\/p>\n<p>Congressman Jim Clyburn (D-SC) chimed in, saying First Amendment rights will return when \u201c90% of the members of the United States Congress get vaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jordan replied saying he wanted to hear from Dr. Fauci.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to know if that\u2019s what Dr. Fauci thinks. Is it 90%, Dr. Fauci? Is it 90%?\u201d Jordan asked. \u201cThat\u2019s what I\u2019d like to know. Give us some objective standards verses when somethings are reached we might be able to get back to having our liberty. When? What are the numbers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of providing a tangible number, Dr. Fauci answered again with generalities.<\/p>\n<p>Clyburn responded again. \u201cWhen 90% of the members of the United States Congress get vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan fired back. \u201cMr. Chairman, I don\u2019t want you to answer my question.
