Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and others, to the floor for a vote, Pelosi answered, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She later clarified, however, that she has \u201cno plans\u201d to bring the current bill to the floor, but that she \u201cdoesn\u2019t know if that\u2019s a good idea or bad idea\u201d to expand the court from 9 to 13 members, and that future a plan to expand the court is \u201cnot out of the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I support the president\u2019s commission to study such a proposal, but frankly, I\u2019m not \u2014 right now, we\u2019re back, our members, our committees are working. We\u2019re putting together the infrastructure bill and the rest,\u201d Pelosi said. \u201cI don\u2019t know if that\u2019s a good idea or a bad idea. I think it\u2019s an idea that should be considered and I think the president\u2019s taking the right approach to have a commission to study such a thing. It\u2019s a big step.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi then suggested that packing the court is a legitimate way to break gridlock if Congress is faced with certain \u201cchallenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not out of the question. It has been done before in the history of our country a long time ago. And the growth of our country, the size of our country, the growth of our challenges in terms of the economy, etc., might necessitate such a thing,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/news\/supreme-court-justices-number-constitution#:~:text=Somodevilla%2FGetty%20Images-,The%20Constitution%20doesn&#039;t%20stipulate%20how%20many%20justices%20should%20serve,appointed%20to%20the%20Supreme%20Court.&amp;text=When%20George%20Washington%20signed%20the,Supreme%20Court%20justices%20at%20six.\">had exactly 9 justices since 1869<\/a>. Prior to that, the number fluctuated from 6, at the time of President George Washington, to 5, to prevent then-President Thomas Jefferson from appointing a new justice to the Court, to 10 during President Abraham Lincoln\u2019s tenure. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt tried to \u201cpack\u201d the court by adding 6 judges in the 1930s, but the Senate killed his hopes, shooting down the proposal 70 votes to 20.<\/p>\n<p>The Court, it appears, has never been expanded to meet the \u201cgrowth\u201d of the country or because of economic \u201cchallenges,\u201d despite Pelosi\u2019s suggestion.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have toyed with the idea of \u201cpacking\u201d the court since President Donald Trump appointed now-Justice Amy Coney Barrett to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The bill unveiled earlier this week would have added four justices, all, it seems, appointed by President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p>The bill is \u201creportedly being led by House Judiciary Committee Chair Jerry Nadler of New York, Subcommittee Chair Hank Johnson of Georgia, and Rep. Mondaire Jones of New York in the House, while Sen.
