It seems that whites have grown tired of hearing about racism.&#8221; Was that a joke, too?<\/p>\n<p>In Wednesday&#8217;s hearing, Clarke assured lawmakers that &#8220;contemporaneous reporting by the campus paper made very clear&#8221; she harbored no racist views.<\/p>\n<p>False. The editors of the <i>Crimson&nbsp;<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/1994\/11\/4\/clarke-should-retract-statements-pbtbwo-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called on her<\/a> to retract her claims. In an editorial titled, &#8220;Clarke Should Retract Statements,&#8221; they wrote: &#8220;We searched in vain for a hint of irony in Clarke&#8217;s letter.&#8221; She had, they concluded, &#8220;resorted to bigotry, pure and simple.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Five days after the editorial was published, a student columnist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/1994\/11\/9\/fire-with-fire-pharvard-has-just\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>: &#8220;By disseminating racist theories of her own\u2014however ambiguously\u2014Clarke has done nothing to refute what she abhors and has done much to poison the atmosphere further.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Even her defenders weren&#8217;t in on the joke. They explained that, having spoken with Clarke, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/1994\/11\/7\/call-for-retraction-not-professional-pi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">became clear<\/a> she meant to question why the &#8220;racist opinions of white Harvard \u2018scholars&#8217; are publicly debated while racist opinions of Black \u2018scholars&#8217; are categorically rejected.&#8221; And indeed Clarke <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/1994\/12\/7\/clarke-was-wrong-to-endorse-martin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">invited<\/a> the racist black &#8220;scholar&#8221; Tony Martin to Harvard&#8217;s campus to discuss his book <i>The Jewish Onslaught\u2014<\/i>another move the <i>Crimson <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/1994\/12\/7\/clarke-was-wrong-to-endorse-martin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">condemned<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Engaging in radical politics while studying at college is not an unforgivable sin.
