I\u2019ve hated myself for a long time,\u201d Underwood told Roberts during their interview. \u201cAnd I\u2019m gay. And I came to terms with that earlier this year and have been processing it. And I came to terms with that earlier this year and have been processing it\u2026 I\u2019m the happiest and healthiest I\u2019ve ever been in my life.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PoYJUAPBpA\">https:\/\/t.co\/PoYJUAPBpA<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/isP7SptUu7\">pic.twitter.com\/isP7SptUu7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Good Morning America (@GMA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GMA\/status\/1382296967250776065?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 14, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Underwood continued to say that the tumultuous impact of 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic made people \u201clook at themselves in the mirror and figure out who they are and what they\u2019ve been running from or what they\u2019ve been putting off in their lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Roberts said that she could \u201csee the joy\u201d and \u201csee the relief\u201d in Underwood during the interview, after which the former Bachelor star said he was \u201cemotional in, like such a good, happy, positive way,\u201d and is \u201cthe happiest and healthiest\u201d he\u2019s ever been.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Later, he spoke of the \u201cdark and bad\u201d time he experienced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere was a moment in L.A. that I woke up and I didn\u2019t think I was gonna wake up. I didn\u2019t have the intentions of waking up. And I did,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On the subject of whether the female contestants during his season of \u201cThe Bachelor\u201d may have felt misled in some way, Underwood responded, \u201c<\/span><span>I\u2019ve thought a lot about this too, of, \u2018Do I regret being the Bachelor and do I regret handling it the way that I did?\u2019 I do.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI do think I could\u2019ve handled it better, I\u2019ll say that,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Roberts later asked Underwood if he had any advice for those struggling to \u201ccome out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBut if I had to go back and give anybody advice, I mean, you\u2019re gonna get through it is what I would tell myself,\u201d he answered. \u201cKeep fighting for you. Keep choosing you every morning. And when the time\u2019s ready or when the time\u2019s right and you\u2019re ready, do it on your own time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cUnderwood was then the lead of season 23 of \u2018The Bachelor\u2019 in 2019, with his virginity being a frequent topic of conversation and his <\/span><span>famous fence-jumping moment<\/span><span> being one of the franchise\u2019s most dramatic moments,\u201d Good Morning America reported. \u201cHe gave his final rose to contestant Cassie Randolph but <\/span><span>ultimately chose to not propose<\/span><span> to her, though they later told \u2018GMA\u2019 they had <\/span><span>discussed an engagement<\/span><span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe two dated after the show wrapped until <\/span><span>announcing their breakup<\/span><span> in early 2020. They later made headlines when Randolph <\/span><span>was granted a restraining order<\/span><span> against Underwood, accusing him of stalking and harassing her. In a police report, she accused him of putting a tracking device on her car. Underwood later released a statement explaining that he and Randolph had resolved their issues in private. She later dismissed the restraining order and requested the police investigation be dropped,\u201d the report continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Bachelor\u201d was the center of another media storm earlier this year after the long-running series became embroiled in a supposed scandal regarding comments made regarding \u201ccancel culture\u201d and the past behavior of a contestant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c\u2019The Bachelor\u2019 host Chris Harrison has issued a formal apology for \u2018perpetuating racism\u2019 after he requested that a Bachelor contestant be given \u2018grace\u2019 and allowed to explain her attendance at a 2018 party with an \u2018antebellum\u2019 theme,\u2019\u201d reported the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bachelor-host-apologizes-for-perpetuating-racism-after-asking-for-grace-for-embattled-contestant\"><span>Daily Wire<\/span><\/a><span> in February.
