For example, if your post was taken down by Facebook or Instagram, users had the ability to challenge this decision via an external panel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs its community grew to more than 2 billion people, it became increasingly clear to the Facebook company that it shouldn\u2019t be making so many decisions about speech and online safety on its own,\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><span>Facebook\u2019s \u201cOversight Board\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oversightboard.com\/\"><span>website<\/span><\/a><span> reads.<\/span><span>&nbsp;\u201cThe Oversight Board was created to help Facebook answer some of the most difficult questions around freedom of expression online: what to take down, what to leave up, and why.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThat means that if you post something on Facebook or Instagram and it\u2019s taken down for violating any of Facebook\u2019s <\/span><span>ever-changing<\/span><span> rules on things like hate speech, nudity, misinformation, or violence \u2014 you will soon have the ability to appeal that decision to someone besides Facebook,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2020\/10\/22\/21528859\/facebook-oversight-board-mark-zuckerberg\">Vox<\/a> reported in October. \u201cFor now, that option will roll out in waves, and in the next few weeks, Facebook says it\u2019ll be an option for all users.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, in an <a href=\"https:\/\/oversightboard.com\/news\/267806285017646-the-oversight-board-is-accepting-user-appeals-to-remove-content-from-facebook-and-instagram\/\">announcement<\/a>&nbsp;this week, the Oversight Board unveiled its new role in getting content pulled from the platform. \u201cFrom today, users will be able to appeal content to the Oversight Board which they want removed from Facebook and Instagram.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>Where users have exhausted Facebook\u2019s appeals process, they can challenge the company\u2019s decision by appealing eligible content to the Oversight Board,\u201d the announcement states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSo far, users have been able to appeal content to the Board which they think should be restored to Facebook or Instagram,\u201d the announcement continues. \u201cNow, users can also appeal content to the Board which they think should be removed from Facebook or Instagram. The Board will use its independent judgment to decide what to leave up and what to take down. Our decisions will be binding on Facebook.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Explaining how the Oversight Board makes these decisions, Facebook provides a six-step process.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>The Oversight Board selects cases that \u201caffect many users\u201d that are of \u201ccritical importance to public discourse,\u201d and\/or \u201craise important questions about Facebook\u2019s policies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>A \u201cdiverse\u201d five-member panel meets to discuss the case, with members of the panel being \u201crandomly chosen.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>The panel then determines whether the content \u201cviolates Facebook\u2019s Community Standards and values,\u201d as well as \u201cinternational human rights standards.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>The panel will also take into consideration \u201cinformation from the user, Facebook, outside experts, and public comments\u201d to reach a \u201cdraft decision.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>The draft decision is then provided to all Oversight Board members for final review, with a majority required to reach a published decision.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>The decision is then published on Facebook\u2019s website, with the decision acted upon within seven days.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-facebook-oversight-idUSKBN2C01HA\">Reuters<\/a>, \u201c<\/span><span>The board has 19 members, including former Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt and several law experts and rights advocates.
