The National Association of Evangelicals, which represents more than 45,000 local churches, is part of a new coalition that will host events, work with media outlets and distribute various public messages to build trust among wary evangelicals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Speaking with Jake Tapper on CNN, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg argued in favor of white evangelical Christians receiving the vaccine, saying \u201cI guess what I would hope that they might consider is that maybe a vaccine is part of God\u2019s plan for how you\u2019re going to take care of yourself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"6.7358490566038\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Pete Buttigieg tells evangelical Christians that \u201ca vaccine is part of God\u2019s plan.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3Sx3KsLr4R\">pic.twitter.com\/3Sx3KsLr4R<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ian Haworth (@ighaworth) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ighaworth\/status\/1381624333529980929?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 12, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>In recent days, the legacy media have rallied around this specific demographic in an openly negative manner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/05\/us\/covid-vaccine-evangelicals.html\"><span>New York Times<\/span><\/a><span> published a piece titled, \u201cWhite Evangelical Resistance Is Obstacle in Vaccination Effort,\u201d noting that \u201c<\/span><span>The deeply held spiritual convictions or counterfactual arguments may vary. But across white evangelical America, reasons not to get vaccinated have spread as quickly as the virus that public health officials are hoping to overcome through herd immunity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coronavirus-vaccine-skepticism-white-evangelicals-us-32898166bbb673ad87842af24c8daefb\"><span>Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span> reported that \u201cVaccine skepticism runs deep among white evangelicals in US,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/coronavirus\/ct-aud-nw-nyt-evangelicals-covid-vaccine-20210405-bx7srtaybvd3jm2djcrrr6a53a-story.html\">Baltimore Sun<\/a> had a headline of \u201c<\/span><span>How white evangelicals\u2019 vaccine refusal could prolong the pandemic<\/span><span>,\u201d while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sun-sentinel.com\/coronavirus\/vaccines\/fl-ne-florida-christians-covid-vaccine-ss-prem-20210410-uixzc57sargopm4m56gf4v3gou-story.html\">South Florida Sun Sentinel<\/a> went with \u201c<\/span><span>Florida evangelicals on vaccine: Right thing to do or mark of the beast?<\/span><span>\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The tone used when reporting on the \u201cvaccine hesitancy\u201d of some white evangelical Christians is clear. However, this group is far from the only category to express significant levels of vaccine skepticism, and yet remains one of the primary targets of subjective scorn and derision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For example, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/03\/23\/10-facts-about-americans-and-coronavirus-vaccines\/ft_21-03-18_vaccinefacts\/\"><span>Pew Research<\/span><\/a><span>, 33% of black protestants said that they will not get the vaccine in March 2021. In February, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ap-norc-poll-3rd-adult-skeptical-vaccine-3779574a6d45d38cfc1d8615eb176b2d\"><span>Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span> acknowledged that vaccine resistance \u201cwas found to run higher among younger people, people without college degrees, Black Americans and Republicans,\u201d later adding that \u201cBlack Americans appear less likely than white Americans to say they have received the shot or will definitely or probably get vaccinated, 57% versus 68%.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/healthcare\/public-global-health\/537454-young-black-americans-more-skeptical-of-covid-19\"><span>The Hill<\/span><\/a><span> also reported in February that \u201c41 percent of black adults aged between 18 and 44 said they will not get vaccinated.\u201d This means that, according to this data, more young black adults exhibited vaccine hesitancy than white evangelical Christians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Despite the data-based similarities between young black adults and white evangelical Christians, the coverage \u2014 if any \u2014 of such hesitancy or skepticism in the black community relied on a far more apologetic and far less judgmental tone. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/10\/07\/health\/coronavirus-vaccine-trials-african-americans.html\">New York Times<\/a> published a <\/span><span>piece<\/span><span> titled, \u201cI Won\u2019t Be Used as a Guinea Pig for White People.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5925074\/black-americans-covid-19-vaccine-distrust\/\"><span>Time Magazine<\/span><\/a><span> wrote, \u201cFueled by a History of Mistreatment, Black Americans Distrust the New COVID-19 Vaccines,\u201d while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/2021\/02\/16\/black-history-covid-vaccine-fears-medical-experiments\/4358844001\/\"><span>USA Today<\/span><\/a><span> went with, \u201cAmerica has a history of medically abusing Black people. No wonder many are wary of COVID-19 vaccines.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/black-people-are-justifiably-wary-of-a-vaccine-their-trust-must-be-earned\/2020\/12\/09\/4cf5f18c-3a36-11eb-9276-ae0ca72729be_story.html\">Washington Post<\/a> even went with, \u201c<\/span><span data-qa=\"headline-opinion-text\">Black people are justifiably wary of a vaccine. Their trust must be earned.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The issue here is not whether or not vaccine skepticism is founded or unfounded, or whether it is understandable or irrational. The issue is that the legacy media \u2014 when data suggests a \u201cproblematic\u201d similarity between two groups \u2014 react by applying an additional layer of context to one group and not the other, allowing them \u2014 in this case \u2014 to criticize evangelical Christians while simultaneously defending black Americans for precisely the same behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Ian Haworth is an Editor and Writer for The Daily Wire.
