Gretchen Whitmer (D) has been faced with calls to keep her state open after urging residents to stay at home to slow the spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Whitmer told reporters on Sunday, she\u2019s calling for a temporary two-week long shutdown of in-person learning, youth sports games as well as restaurants and bars.<\/p>\n<p>Coronavirus cases in Michigan have risen in recent weeks, especially among teenagers and children. Cases in children under 10-years-old jumped by 230 percent since February and people aged 10 to 19 experienced a 227 percent increase in cases.<\/p>\n<p>This came despite the Democrat governor admitting the state has some of the strictest COVID-19 measures in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are seeing a surge in Michigan despite the fact that we have some of the strongest policies in place: mask mandates, capacity limits, working from home,\u201d Whitmer stated. \u201cWe\u2019ve asked our state for a two-week pause\u2026despite all that we are seeing a surge of variance and that\u2019s precisely why we\u2019re really encouraging them to think about surging vaccines into the state of Michigan.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">LIVE NOW with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovWhitmer?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GovWhitmer<\/a> and local health officials at Eastern Michigan University\u2019s vaccination site to discuss vaccine access for Washtenaw County residents.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ez8Z7322d4\">https:\/\/t.co\/ez8Z7322d4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rep.
