Often this was a conscious choice. There is racism physically built into some of our highways, and that\u2019s why the jobs plan has specifically committed to reconnect some of the communities that were divided by these dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, if you\u2019re in Washington, I\u2019m told that the history of that highway is one that was built at the expense of communities of color in the D.C. area,\u201d Buttigieg continued, according <a href=\"https:\/\/thegrio.com\/2021\/04\/06\/pete-buttigieg-racism-us-infrastructure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">theGrio<\/a>. \u201cThere are stories, and I think Philadelphia and Pittsburgh [and] in New York, Robert Moses famously saw through the construction of a lot of highways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WATCH:<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden <u><a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/pete-buttigieg-says-racism-physically-161956784.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">promoted<\/a><\/u>&nbsp;his massive $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan on Wednesday,&nbsp;saying, \u201cWe don\u2019t just fix for today. We build for tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo hundred years ago, trains weren\u2019t traditional infrastructure either until America made a choice to lay down tracks across the country,\u201d he continued. \u201cHighways weren\u2019t traditional infrastructure until we allowed ourselves to imagine that roads could connect our nation across state lines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As theGrio reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"22\">\n<p><em>Phase one of fixing the nation\u2019s infrastructure is not just about some of the obvious: repairing potholes, bridges, roads,&nbsp;airports, schools, creating new power grids, replacing lead pipes and expanding broadband.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There are also efforts to correct America\u2019s racist wrongs.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Equity is now being built into the soon to be updated black-and-white road maps of yesteryear. \u201cIf you think about it, much of this infrastructure was paid for and designed before the Voting Rights Act of 1965,\u201d former Obama Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx tells theGrio. \u201cThat was a time before Black people were at the table.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Buttigieg has raised eyebrows before for comments he made regarding Biden\u2019s infrastructure plan. As The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/what-awful-instincts-buttigieg-torched-on-social-media-for-being-open-to-taxing-motorists-per-mile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"26\">\n<p><em>Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg was ridiculed on social media on Friday for expressing openness to a policy that would pay for President Joe Biden\u2019s massive infrastructure budget by taxing motorists for each mile they drive.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSo, I think that shows a lot promise,\u201d Buttigieg said regarding a mileage-based tax during an interview with CNBC. \u201cIf we believe in that so-called \u2018user-pays principle,\u2019 the idea that part of how we pay for roads is you pay based on how much you drive.
