Left-leaning fact-checkers quickly moved to provide cover for the president.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThese bills, one, require background checks for anyone purchasing a gun at a gun show, or an online sale,\u201d Biden said. \u201cMost people don\u2019t know it, you walk into a store and you buy a gun, you have a background check. But you go to a gun show, you can buy whatever you want, and no background check.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.5316455696203\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Joe Biden lies, claiming that you can buy a gun at a gun show without a background check. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7IhUJWHrbP\">pic.twitter.com\/7IhUJWHrbP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ian Haworth (@ighaworth) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ighaworth\/status\/1380202747316822017?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 8, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The Daily Wire correctly reported that this statement is a \u201cfalsehood\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12.599315068493\">\n<p><i><span>Federally licensed gun sellers are required, by law, to run background checks on all firearm purchases, whether at a gun show or in their gun store.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Unlicensed private individuals are <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/article\/2016\/jan\/07\/politifact-sheet-3-things-know-about-gun-show-loop\/\"><i><span>permitted<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span> to sell guns without running a background check, but this is the case regardless of their location.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>However, prominent fact-checking organizations responded differently, either ignoring the statements completely or rushing to soften criticism of Joe Biden\u2019s claims by describing them as \u201cmisleading,\u201d \u201cexaggerations\u201d or \u201cmisstatements.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In response to Biden\u2019s words, PolitiFact tweeted, \u201cYou go to a gun show, you can buy whatever you want, and no background check. NEW: In today\u2019s gun policy address, President Biden exaggerated about background checks at gun shows.\u201d PolitiFact rated the statement as \u201cmostly\u201d false.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.0192307692308\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NEW: In today&#8217;s gun policy address, President Biden exaggerated about background checks at gun shows. Mostly False. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fXAHU9pfCr\">https:\/\/t.co\/fXAHU9pfCr<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4ezABzIm9f\">pic.twitter.com\/4ezABzIm9f<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 PolitiFact (@PolitiFact) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PolitiFact\/status\/1380271856708685824?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 8, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>In the report, Louis Jacobson and Amy Sherman write, \u201cIn gun policy address, Joe Biden exaggerates about background checks at gun shows.\u201d In their conclusion, they wrote, \u201c<\/span><span>This is overstated. If you go to a gun show and buy a firearm from a federally licensed seller, you will have to pass a background check, just as if you went to a bricks-and-mortar gun store. You would only escape a background check at a gun show if you bought from a seller who isn\u2019t federally licensed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/08\/us\/biden-guns-fact-check.html\"><span>New York Times<\/span><\/a><span> published an analysis, with the title \u201cA fact-check of Biden\u2019s guns speech reveals some inaccuracies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Linda Qiu, a \u201cfact-check reporter\u201d who moved to The New York Times from PolitiFact, deemed Biden\u2019s background check statement to be \u201cexaggerated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2021\/04\/09\/fact-checking-bidens-remarks-guns\/\"><span>Washington Post\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span> fact-checkers didn\u2019t even go as far as to agree that Biden\u2019s statement was false, suggesting, \u201c<\/span><span>Whether this statement is misleading depends on how you hear Biden\u2019s words.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cStill, Biden\u2019s phrasing can leave the impression that no background checks are required at gun shows. Our colleagues at PolitiFact <\/span><span>labeled<\/span><span> Biden\u2019s statement as \u2018mostly false.\u2019 We would lean more toward \u2018half true,\u2019 (i.e., Two Pinocchios) given how Biden\u2019s statement could be misinterpreted,\u201d the Washington Post fact-checkers concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>To their credit, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/2021\/04\/bidens-missteps-on-gun-policies\/\"><span>FactCheck.org<\/span><\/a><span> did conclude that Biden\u2019s claim was false, writing, \u201cBiden falsely said that \u2018you can buy whatever you want\u2019 at a gun show with \u2018no background check.\u2019 Federal firearm dealers at gun shows must run background checks. Private sales between nondealers are exempt from federal law.\u201d In a similar fashion to others, however, they downplayed this falsehood, saying that Biden \u201cmisstated the facts\u201d on existing policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Ian Haworth is an Editor and Writer for The Daily Wire.
