It claims that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other heads of the company \u201chave engaged in a coordinated campaign to convince the public, elected representatives, federal officials, and non-profit leaders in the nation\u2019s capital that Facebook is a safe product by misrepresenting that Facebook takes down or removes any content that violates Facebook\u2019s Community Standards or other policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group\u2019s lawsuit claims that Facebook and its senior team failed to \u201cabide by their promises to the public, national officials, and civil rights leaders\u201d in well-known instances that involve former president Donald Trump \u201cor white nationalist militias.\u201d The lawsuit says that \u201cordinary people are bombarded with harmful content in violation of Facebook\u2019s own policies on hate speech, bullying, harassment, dangerous organizations, and violence\u201d every day and that \u201cHateful, anti-Muslim attacks are especially pervasive on Facebook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit continues:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"17\">\n<p><em>Yet Facebook refuses to \u201cremove\u201d this content or \u201ctake it down,\u201d as its executives repeatedly <\/em><em>promised that they and the company would do when they learn of such content. Instead, in an effort to convince Congress, civil rights groups, and the public that their product is safe, Facebook\u2019s officials have consistently misrepresented the company\u2019s actual practices when it comes to enforcing Facebook\u2019s own its own [sic] standards and policies to keep Facebook free of hate speech and other harmful content.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This failure has amplified the volume of anti-Muslim hate bombarding Facebook users. And the anti-Muslim hate that\u2019s so pervasive on Facebook presents an enormous problem both online and in real life. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/lawsuits-mark-zuckerberg-district-of-columbia-b579010afbf11d3aa30000f1ee75178b\">Associated Press<\/a>, the lawsuit says that Facebook has done nothing or very little in response to many notices of hate speech or calls to violence. \u201cMaking false and deceptive statements about removing hateful and harmful content violates the District of Columbia\u2019s consumer-protection law and its bar on fraud, the lawsuit says.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust like a car company can\u2019t exaggerate how safe their product is to boost sales, Facebook isn\u2019t allowed to do that either. And that\u2019s what they are doing,\u201d Mary Bauer, legal director at Muslim Advocates, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/tech\/2021\/04\/08\/facebook-hate-speech-muslims-lawsuit-zuckerberg\/4844524001\/\">USA Today<\/a>. \u201cThey are lying about the safety of their products to avoid regulation by Congress and to assuage the concerns of the public and nonprofit groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/tech\/2021\/04\/08\/facebook-hate-speech-muslims-lawsuit-zuckerberg\/4844524001\/\">USA Today<\/a> reported that Facebook responded to the lawsuit in a statement via email on Thursday, saying, \u201cWe do not allow hate speech on Facebook and regularly work with experts, non-profits, and stakeholders to help make sure Facebook is a safe place for everyone, recognizing anti-Muslim rhetoric can take different forms. We have invested in AI technologies to take down hate speech, and we proactively detect 97 percent of what we remove.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/communitystandards\/hate_speech\">Facebook\u2019s policy on hate speech<\/a> says that it defines hate speech \u201cas a direct attack against people on the basis of what we call protected characteristics: race, ethnicity, national origin, disability, religious affiliation, caste, sexual orientation, sex, gender identity and serious disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The policy clarifies that the company defines attacks \u201cas violent or dehumanizing speech, harmful stereotypes, statements of inferiority, expressions of contempt, disgust or dismissal, cursing, and calls for exclusion or segregation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Social media executives have gone before Congress to testify about the ways in which they push back against misinformation and extremism on their sites. Zuckerberg told the House Energy and Commerce Committee that the issue is \u201cnuanced,\u201d AP reported. \u201cAny system can make mistakes\u201d in moderating damaging material, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiffs who brought the complaint are demanding a trial by jury and statutory damages of $1,500 per violation of the D.C.
