But a day after Beau\u2019s funeral, his cocaine-addicted sibling believed that his tragic passing might create an opening to run for office himself.<\/p>\n<p>In \u201cBeautiful Things,\u201d his book released Tuesday, he recounts an interaction with his then-wife Kathleen as they returned home from the funeral:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"17\">\n<p>I pulled the car over and told Kathleen that maybe politics was now an option for me. \u201cYou know, as horrible as I feel, I have a feeling of real purpose,\u201d I said. It seemed so many people were more willing to forgive my past mistakes\u2014relapses with drinking, administrative discharge from the Navy Reserve\u2014than I was willing to forgive myself.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose her response\u2014Are you serious?\u2014was entirely warranted. We didn\u2019t say another word to each other for the rest of the ride. Or, really, ever again.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Hunter idolizes Beau throughout the book, at one point gushing, \u201cHe had the longest eyelashes to go with those striking blue eyes. He had great hair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Joe Biden\u2019s own memoir, the now-president once wrote, \u201cI was pretty sure Beau could run for President some day, and, with his brother\u2019s help, he could win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Hunter didn\u2019t just want to help Beau. At times, it seems he wanted to be him.<\/p>\n<p>He proceeded to shack up with Beau\u2019s widow, Hallie. \u201cBy the time we returned to Delaware at the end of the week, we were no longer just two people bound by shared grief. We were a couple,\u201d he writes.<\/p>\n<p>Then he married another woman only a week after meeting her, instantly professing his love to her on a blind date, based seemingly on her physical similarity to his brother:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"13\">\n<p>We both smiled as I sat down. I spoke up first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have the exact same eyes as my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, not long after that, having no idea what I was going to say until it jumped out of my mouth: \u201cI know this probably isn\u2019t a good way to start a first date, but I\u2019m in love with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Beau\u2019s cancer diagnosis also helps Hunter justify his five-figures-a-month paycheck from a Ukranian gas company:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p>I want to be clear: Beau\u2019s health problems didn\u2019t prompt me to do something I wouldn\u2019t have done otherwise. The money was helpful, but I could\u2019ve figured out another way to make it. I wasn\u2019t desperate. Yet it did provide me the ability not to work as hard at continuing to develop clients, the most time-consuming part of my work\u2014drilling twenty dry wells to finally hit pay dirt.
