But a Daily Wire investigation found that it is tied to longstanding far-left groups that some community members say oppose Asians\u2019 actual interests, including Stop AAPI Hate\u2019s fiscal sponsor, Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The San Francisco-based CAA has advocated for affirmative action in school admissions, a policy that could sharply curtail the number of Asians at rigorous universities. It was part of a campaign coalition that recently pushed a California ballot measure that would have allowed affirmative action. Known as Proposition 16, the proposal was rejected by voters in November 2020, with polling suggesting that Asians played a strong role in the measure\u2019s defeat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Wenyuan Wu, the executive director of the former \u201cNo on Prop 16\u201d campaign, described CAA as \u201ca progressive organization with a mission to promote race-based affirmative action.\u201d According to Wu, \u201cCAA was a front runner\u201d in last year\u2019s campaign to reinstate racial preferences in California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSome of its members such as Terry Cui and Jinxia Niu are Chinese citizens with visible ties to the CCP (Chinese Communist Party),\u201d Wu told The Daily Wire. \u201cI have extensive experience dealing with them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Wu currently serves as the Californians for Equal Rights Foundation\u2019s executive director, a nonprofit built upon the success of the \u201cNo on 16\u201d campaign. She said both Cui and Niu played significant roles in attempting to influence California\u2019s Asian-American vote through WeChat, a popular social media app among people of Asian descent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>More than half of the immigrants who arrived in the Golden State last decade were born in Asia, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ppic.org\/publication\/immigrants-in-california\/\"><span>recent data<\/span><\/a><span> provided by the Public Policy Institute of California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Niu is currently identified on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/2bLQ3\"><span>CAA\u2019s website<\/span><\/a><span> as its \u201cChinese Digital Engagement Program Manager.\u201d Although she did not respond to an inquiry from The Daily Wire, CAA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oacc.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/210209_Press-Statement_Asian-American-Organizations-Demand-Action-Against-Violence-For-Press.pdf\"><span>press releases<\/span><\/a><span> have listed her as a media contact, describing Niu as a \u201cChinese Language Media Specialist.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Her LinkedIn profile indicates she came to northern California in 2017 as a visiting scholar at Stanford University. It acknowledges Niu previously spent nearly four years as a journalist with Zhejiang Daily Press Group Co., Ltd. That organization has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180712123839\/https:\/www.scmp.com\/business\/china-business\/article\/1385987\/new-boss-and-backing-pipeline-hu-shulis-caixin-media-group\"><span>described<\/span><\/a><span> by Hong Kong\u2019s South China Morning Post as a \u201cstate-owned newspaper conglomerate.\u201d Before that, Niu\u2019s page says she had a 20-month stint at the Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation, also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/shanghai-film-fest-relativity-partners-711892\"><span>controlled<\/span><\/a><span> by the state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Although Cui\u2019s name is no longer listed as staff on CAA\u2019s website, a LinkedIn profile under his name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/6bNlq\"><span>indicates<\/span><\/a><span> he started working for the group last summer, serving as a Chinese Digital Engagement Organizer. CAA did not respond to an inquiry from The Daily Wire seeking clarification of his current employment status. However, its website still features <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/TGz2D\"><span>author pages<\/span><\/a><span> credited to Cui that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/BXkQQ\"><span>include<\/span><\/a><span> articles promoting Proposition 16 and the Stop AAPI Hate initiative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Also known as Chentao Cui, he purportedly came to America to participate in a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship in Journalism program at Arizona State University (ASU), where he studied from August 2019 through June 2020, around the time he is believed to have started working for CAA. ASU\u2019s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, in partnership with the U.S. State Department and the Institute of International Education, \u201cbrings accomplished, often award-winning, mid-career professionals from emerging democracies to the United States for an intensive, 10-month academic study and professional experience,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cronkite.asu.edu\/outreach\/humphrey-fellowship\"><span>according<\/span><\/a><span> to the university\u2019s website.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.1975308641975\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Women cannot eat with men in China, they must only eat in the kitchen,&#8221; says Hubert H. Upon completion of the curriculum, he soon began promoting Proposition 16 to Chinese language community members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Daily Wire obtained a CAA job posting from last summer that laid out the responsibilities of the Chinese Digital Engagement Organizer position, which included building and coordinating<\/span> <span>\u201cprogressive Chinese language networks through Wechat Groups, educate and engage communities on public policy issues, and share and help create Chinese language content,\u201d and:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i><span>Establish progressive AAPI digital presence on Wechat to influence Chinese language community engagement on policy and advocacy campaign(s);<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><i><span>Disseminate CAA assets, CAA-sponsored content, and other relevant campaign material to boost visibility of policy and advocacy efforts on Wechat;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><i><span>Outreach, and recruit local partners, stakeholders, and influencers to serve as surrogates of policy and advocacy campaign(s);&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><i><span>Organize virtual town halls, events, and engagements aimed at public education and mobilization local Chinese language communities on campaign initiatives\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>Cui appeared in a live stream debate on Aug. 19, 2020, to argue on behalf of Prop 16. Official representatives of \u201cNo on 16,\u201d including Wu and statewide finance chair Frank Xu, also took part in that discussion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The event was sponsored by ICITI TV, a Chinese-language online TV channel based in the U.S. The outlet shares an address outside of Los Angeles with EDI Media Inc. According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoover.org\/sites\/default\/files\/research\/docs\/diamondschell_corrected-ch6-media-april2020finalfile-2.pdf\"><span>report<\/span><\/a><span> published by the Hoover Institution in 2018, EDI is a firm which \u201cowns other media properties that toe Beijing\u2019s line,\u201d and \u201cwhen it comes to reporting on mainland China, the content of all of EDI\u2019s outlets mirrors that of China\u2019s state-owned media.\u201d The company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/coronavirus\/bailouts\/loans\/edi-media-inc-1900437103\"><span>received<\/span><\/a><span> $478,000 in Paycheck Protection Program loans last year.
